RIP Darren McGavin

This makes me really sad. Darren McGavin, who played the Old Man in Christmas Story, has died. You may also remember him as the Nightstalker. That movie has become an integral part of my holiday season, ever since I first saw it as a kid, and his performance is probably the single greatest factor in...

So, have you set a date?

Sorry.

Congratulations to you both. You know, your first child will have to be named something like Purple Heart.

When my band Oliver's Army plays the song "Oliver's Army" I sometimes change the lyric to "One more widow, not one whit bigger" when it's prudent. The lyrics makes no sense on the surface, but I chose the phrase because it comes from the following poem (sort of). Incident Once ri...

I liked Get Shorty, but it was pretty much the same role as Vincent Vega. Otherwise, not really.

Alexv, I agreed then and now. Blue, I think Station to Station is one of the most underappreciated gems in the Bowie catalogue, and considering the sounds of New Wave to follow, I think it qualifies as a classic. BUT, I also think he did better work to follow-- Low, Heroes and Scary Monsters at leas...

Oh, it's a crap album. No argument here. I'm just saying that after Cosmic Thing, it wasn't crazy to expect a good record. Wrong, but not crazy. My other favorite bit from Crash Test Dummies: "What if the artists ran the TV? All the ads would be for fine scotch whiskey: Glenfiddich, Glenlivet, ...

Since I contributed the first list, and since I reserve the right to call bogus, I'm not making any changes. (It would be too much power). But I'd argue that Eddie Murphy still does good work when he voices cartoon characters. He's definitely fallen away in his live action work, and it's sad, especi...

Yeah, I'm afraid I have to call bogus on Scott Stapp. He was never worth a damn to begin with. He's never been anything but an embarrasment. Sorry, LTZ. Alexv, I disagree about Mickey Roarke and Eric Roberts, but Steve Martin is an EXCELLENT choice. I was conned into taking my kids to the latest Pin...

Out: People who make bullshit excuses. I wasn't going to remove this one, but, see, what had happened was...this guy I know needed a ride, and so I had to give him one or else his sick mother might have died. And plus the traffic was really bad. And I've been kind of sick. So there's that... In: Ann...

I think that list is spot on, at least in terms of titles. All of those are really important records. Whether the author's commentary on each is up to par is another matter.

Barry Sonnenfeld deserved to be on this list precisely because he used to be a great cinematographer and now churns out crap like Wild Wild West. But his replacement is a good one too. Eric Roberts is indeed Julia's brother. He was also nominated for an Academy Award for his work in Star 80 . And he...

Tower of Celebrity Shame

Celebrities who are a complete embarrasment and well beyond any hope of face-saving. The idea is that they are currently complete sellouts who just phone it in now or that their they've done such horrible things that they've outlived their usefulness and become a self-parody in some way. One stipula...

I like that Crash Test Dummies album, and I thought they did a fabulous job opening for EC on the Brutal Youth tour. I also like their previous record, The Ghosts that Haunt Me . It contains "Superman's Song," which is one of my favorite 90's songs. For me the worst is: http://www.mulch.de...

The guy has apparently suffered a minor heart attack now, after some of the birdshot got lodged in his heart. I thought Cheney got him in the head. What a tool.
