I'm genuinely surprised by how many people seem to rank "Shallow Grave" near or at the bottom. That song kicks ass.

This is not a subject about which I can argue, and certainly not with another fan of both records. I love both albums all the way through. So for you to prefer Queen to Strangeways is a bit like prefering Rubber Soul to Revolver. It's all good. (Though Revolver's better).

Love The Queen Is Dead. But I actually agree with them about Strangeways. Still, both records are amazing.

So I went tot he mall for the very last time today before Christmas, and I heard something hi-diddly-larious. As I walked into Dillard's (for those unfamiliar, it's a department store along the lines of Macy's or Bloomingdales, if just a bit more affordable), I noticed signs saying "Happy Holid...

mug, I hope no one would ever mistake my above comments as being in an way supportive of Bill O'Reilly. He's the king of the jerks. And for the record, there's nothing wrong with Happy Holidays. I have no problem with any such greeting. I'm a bit surprised that the non-religious would dig Happy Holi...

I was reminded this morning about a weekly ocurrance for me growing up. As I've doubtless mentioned before, I grew up in an Orthodox Jewish neighborhood in Baltimore. My family were the only gentiles for blocks. Every Friday night, when the sun went down and the Sabbath began for all of our neighbor...

Random thought after watching 'Lord of War'... Why, in America, is it 'Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms ' That sounds to me like 'Bureau of Shoplifters, Jaywalkers and Serial Killers ' The ATF is under the Dept. of the Treasury. Those three items are linked because there are vice taxes attac...

Yep. Well, actually it's the remake of the one commissioned for Rockefeller Center, since the one commissioned was jackhammered on Rockefeller's orders. There aren't any color photographs of the original that show the whole thing (which was unfinished at the time of its untimely demise). There are a...

Music is more able to evoke emotion from me than visual art, but I think that's only to do with me. I'm audio-oriented. But sometimes, I am utterly overwhelmed by the visual. Like with this astounding work by Diego Rivera:

I think that the whole debate on "Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays" is a clever propaganda-fueled war to cover up all the REAL shit done by Christians the last millenia.
And I see some of use are fighting the war on common sense.

My beef with "Imagine" isn't just that I disagree with John (the prospect of there being no heaven doesn't actually thrill me much), but that he's a hypocrite. As Elvis once sang, "was it a millionaire who said 'imagine no possessions?'" I just think the prospect of a guy living ...

My favorite thing about that Courbet painting is the use of shadow. In the scene, the artist paints himself on the right, meeting his patrons and a dog on the road. The patrons are greeting the artist, who is more in the foreground and therefore looms larger. He stands more confidently, and he is fu...

Tonight, after a terrible, terrible day, I learned that iced Mexican beer, in a mug with a salted rim, a fresh lime wedge, and a couple of dashes of Tabasco sauce is a hell of a drink.
