On "Mau Mauing" I recall seeing the term used in the old Tom Wolfe essay on the confrontation between Oakland minorities and the well-meaning liberal bureaucracy. In that context, I think Wolfe meant it to show how the minorities ganged up on the bureaucrats to get money and services, usin...

Don't disagree with anything you say. I distinguish him from Drudge, however, and would allow him his space to vent without fixing his little red wagon. Right wing, religiously inclined movie critics who got their training in the old lefty culture wars and who get read by more than a few readers do ...

What did Medved do/say? I give him a lot more credit than Drudge who is a hack and an opportunist. Medved was voted "most radical" in his Los Angeles high school class, graduated from Yale and attended Yale Law School, where he knew Bill and Hillary Clinton (as well as Kerry). He was an an...

Piggybacking on El Vez, and continuing with the Kael theme, here's my topic: Pauline Kael vs. Andrew Sarris. where do you stand? I know this was all very relevant in the wacky sixties, but I still care. I'm a Sarris man myself, and feel he won the war, but sadly it appears that today's critics (sarr...

I don't get his comments about Idol and North. Is he delusional, or does he really think that the people who watch the Idol shows in England or the US for that matter comprise even 1% of the public that would buy any EC record? Did he really believe when he was "composing" North that he wa...

I have a theory that EC's comments about other artists are really about....EC. So let's dissect the Morrissey paragraph using that approach: "Take Morrissey[LET'S TALK ABOUT HIM AND COMPARE HIM TO ME]. For me, he’s been singing the same tune for 20 years[UNLIKE ME WHOSE CAREER IS THE EPITOME OF...

Blue Chair what you say about Neil may well be established opinion on the man, and may be a consensus of opinion in fact. I chose to list him as overrated because I think that the level of credit given to these career achievements that you list, and others, is overrated. I am not saying he sucks, or...

Ever notice how in all her record covers she slants her face in an attempt to disguise her gargantuan Leno-like chin. The "live in Paris" one is the only one where she doesn't tilt her head enough to hide it.

BambooNeedle, points taken. I agree with your last post.

I just want to make the point that I too am not offended by art that lampoons the Nazis, but distinguish that from wearing the symbols or helmets or whatever as a goof, or to show that they are no big deal.

Bamboo Needle, as I see it there is no need to resort to wearing Nazi symbols to outsmart them or to show that we refuse to be victimized by them. All that does is trivialize the gargantuan atrocities committed by a system which used the swatstika to represent it. I agree with your previous post tha...

Invisible Pole: I too lived under communism for a number of years until my family were granted asylum in the US, and having gone to school in this country in the 70s and 80s prior to the fall of the Berlin Wall I was always put off by the fact that communist symbols of the time (the hammer and cicle...
