Re: What are you listening to right now?

I have it on order, but from Amazon Marketplace, so no auto rip! Can't therefore comment. Am very excited about it, though. Reactions seem to be pretty mixed. I normally agree with most of what the Guardian's A Petridis writes, but he was sniffy here, saying 'they have plenty of ideas, but don't kno...

Re: Morrissey when you least expect it

I won't look at that till I've read it. It's amazing so far - I'm in his secondary school years. It all makes sense. It's very well written.

My signature is very apt right now.

Re: Lou Reed RIP

Walk on the Wild Side and other Transformer classics got me into Lou, though it wasn't till later on that I found out my hero D Bowie was producer of it and did a lot to promote Lou in the UK. But the endless refs to the Velvets in the NME in the late 70s made me check them out, and I've been a huge...

Re: "Elvis Costello: Mystery Dance" - docu. - BBC4 Nov. 8 '1

I can't bloody wait for this. I'm out Friday, but as luck would have it, a gig I was due to play on Sat has been cancelled - hooray! I have nothing more hi-tech than a VHS (yes!) to record it with, but I guess I will, so it can accompany the Bowie: Five Years and the Ron S one from the same wonderfu...

Re: Relatively Insignificant EC Stuff. . .

Those albums were the weirdest things ever. Take, if you will, the juxtaposition of Death Disco with the sleeve photo. And the cover versions were invariably rubbish. Even aged 11 or something they didn't satisfy cos they sounded so unconvincing.

Re: New Gig Thread

Lloyd Cole at the Union Chapel, solo and acoustic. 5th time I've seen him in this format (and 8th in total). Last time at the Union Chapel was with two other guitarists, which made it more varied and textured, but the purity and simplicity of his one man show is a very powerful event. He was in grea...

Get editing on the wiki! The page does show music as well as lyrics, e.g. Viceroy's Row Stations of the Cross live horns. Fairly obscure ref.

Re: New Gig Thread

Sounds good. Haven't heard of Fullbright. Can't resist asking which other Jam songs Weller played? Saw them in 1980, and have even seen Bruce and Rick in the wonderfully names 'From The Jam', but never Weller solo. I think I'd spend the evening wishing him to play another Jam song and getting disapp...

Re: Recently viewed films

A small streak of exceptional films continues having viewed Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine last evening with my wife. We both were excited by it as we exited the theater. It may very well be Allen's best work since Match Point and it is a scalding, cynical treatment of class and its snobbery and pettin...

Re: Pete Thomas on new Jake Bugg album

Good adjectives - looseness and vibrancy. The Conan one is very unloose. It's interesting because 'tightness' is generally regarded as what you should be achieving, but in many ways the opposite 'looseness' is more desirable. I guess it's the yin and yang of the two at once that really does it. Inte...

Wow, great photos and If I Had a Ahmmer in white suit is priceless. Looks like a cross between Elvis and my grandfather. Really would like to have a full version on DVD with some nice extras.

Re: What are you listening to right now?

... well that was fun. Austin City Limits seems to be a great event, not too big, two weekends with lots of good acts. Earlier this evening I watched the Stones in Hyde Park expecting it to be a bit tired and tedious as they appeared to be at Glasto, and actually it wasn't, it was just classic stuff...

Re: Pete Thomas on new Jake Bugg album

Interesting exercise! The drums are mixed brighter and clearer on the Conan show, the sound's a bit murkier and meatier on Later, and maybe has suffered a bit on that clip. There are several things that make Pete's performance trademark Pete and where you'd know it was him if you were just listening...

Re: What are you listening to right now?

Was wondering, IP or anyone else, if you had any comments on Manics' Rewind The Film . Have liked what I've heard - the title track with Hawley sounded great, and on Later this week the opening two songs impressed (haven't seen the end of the show's third song, could be an old classic as often happe...

Re: Relatively Insignificant EC Stuff. . .

Invited to a music-loving friend's 45th party last night, where one was invited to bring a 45rpm or two (I brought a bag, my Radio Radio didn't get aired, but someone's Oliver's Army did), so I made a '45 mixtape' CD that kicked off with, you guessed it, 45. She didn't know the song, she thought, bu...

Re: Pete Thomas on new Jake Bugg album

And on Friday's edition Jools asked about the story with Pete playing with him. Something about a passport issue with the original planned drummer and Pete stepping in. When asked about playing with Bugg, Pete quipped it was nice to play with people his age. Annoyingly Bugg's second song was drum-fr...

Totally, lovely quote there from Ahmir.

John: laughing over the absurd £291 box set. Tempted to nick it? Looking forward to an account of the 4 plays you saw in London.

Also gorgeous, clearly this is a must have album. the songs all seem fairly simple and repetitive in structure, but as ever the tunes and the arrangements are just perfect.

Re: What are you listening to right now?

Great song, and yes his voice sounds as fresh and wonderful as ever. It's basically a repeated chorus with Stevie Wonder's harmonica and a few other embellishments chucked in, but great chorus! Got to get this album, and also fill in a bunch of gaps in my collection. There seems to be a pattern here...

Re: New album for 2013: "Wise Up Ghost" (with The Roots!)

The song WUG is a bit like Tripwire in that it takes the opening of an older song and uses the motif as the basis for the whole new song. I like it, but it isn't the standout for me. As above, Puppet is the song sticking in my head most, more than Tripwire right now. It strikes me as a really origin...

Re: New album for 2013: "Wise Up Ghost" (with The Roots!)

Going on about forty listens now it's starting to sink in. Wow, not sure I'll ever get that far, other than my favourite songs. Must Try Harder. I love the way he sings 'old chum' on Puppet. Very old school English. Reminds me of Bowie in his 'Tony Newley' era (he used the word on Uncle Arthur, for...
