Re: Pete Thomas on new Jake Bugg album

Nice one - I missed the opening of it. Good that Pete was acknowledged that way. Good combination of age and youth there.

Pete Thomas on new Jake Bugg album

http://www.nme.com/news/jake-bugg/72823

Realised this watching Later tonight with Bugg playing an uptempo number, and I thought the ageing codger at the drums was doing a decent job of holding down a tight backbeat when I realised it was none other!

Re: New album for 2013: "Wise Up Ghost" (with The Roots!)

The first side ends with Tripwire, another rewrite, a sort of doo-wop, very-50s ballad kind of feel. I don't get it! In what way is Tripwire a 'rewrite'? Same reaction I had to Rope Leash's comment above. Stick Out Your Tongue is a rewrite, Tripwire is a new song using a small element from Satellit...

Re: What are you listening to right now?

Excellent, another Must Get. Inv Pole was excited and posted a track earlier. Knew about near blindness, but not near deafness. Poor Paddy! Could really do with some good new songs of his in my head. I remember walking across towards the Junction with you, presumably to see Lloyd C at the J2, where ...

Yeah, I kept well away from it, couldn't face it - don't want to be overly swayed by reviews, but everyone panned it.

Re: New album for 2013: "Wise Up Ghost" (with The Roots!)

Will be interesting to see how views on WUG develop with time. There are a lot of interesting things about it. Seems to me there are three standout tracks among the full Deluxe affair: Walk Us Uptown, Tripwire, The Puppet Has Cut His Strings. The first is rhythmic, funked up (and not in a whiny trud...

Re: New album for 2013: "Wise Up Ghost" (with The Roots!)

Fascinating - the 1998 link seems to confirm the 'response' suggestion. Has Costello said anything in the interviews about this or this song's lyrics in any way? There have been references to Las Malvinas, to Shipbuilding, etc., which the use of 'vos' would underline, but the song refers to Montevid...

Re: Recently viewed films

I love nothing more than experiencing the sensation that we are mere tiny specs of matter adrift in a vast eternity of nothingness. Can't beat a bit of persepctive. Dying to see this film. Essential to do so in 3D?

Re: New album for 2013: "Wise Up Ghost" (with The Roots!)

I don't get the bundle replacement thing given that the only link between the two songs is a tiny intro portion from Satellite that you could blink (or its auditory equivalent) and miss. And they're both soulful, slow 6/8 songs.

Re: New album for 2013: "Wise Up Ghost" (with The Roots!)

Certain amount of going round in circles here with the recent discussion about EC's supposed disenchantment after NR's sales, etc. I really think there's a different perspective here on this side of the Atlantic (or maybe it's just in East Anglia?). My view is he'll always have opportunities to make...

Re: New album for 2013: "Wise Up Ghost" (with The Roots!)

Now that I've finally got the damn thing, I find I'm not listening to it much. Hearing it on the hifi didn't thrill me as much as I thought it would. A lot of it falls a little flat. Tripwire is great (not a 'whiney trudge', can't get that awful phrase out of my head). But is much else? Hasn't grabb...

Probably.

Not sure if this review was posted. Tripwire described as a 'whiny trudge through funkless-ness'!

Re: New album for 2013: "Wise Up Ghost" (with The Roots!)

Personally I think that's a pretty corny line, and enjoy the fact that the one comment following the review takes it to task: "A strangely inept review. I've never seen a writer so gleefully miss the point. Also, "Wise Up the Ghost may live on as ambient music played dimly in the backgroun...

Madison Taylor wins the prize for Most Moronic Review, even more than the other one we commented on. Rockabilly? Cacophonic? Moron who doesn't understand the words he/she (?) uses.

Re: WISE UP GHOST Deluxe

Mine finally showed up too. Despite the presence of 'UK' in the vendor's name, it was US supplied, so no glue incidents. Well it's lovely to finally have it and to hear Tripwire et al at home. Was sounding great on the hifi, can't wait to play it loads and get to know it. One odd detail: why is the ...

Aha! Didn't get to see it - one for the telly. I did want to see What Maisie Knew and missed it, but the really exciting sounding one is the Stephen Frears one that was on in the Venice biennale with Judi Dench, Philomena . Damn, just lost 15 mins! That was fun. Slight;y heavy on the Canada, at least for me. Some have a lot of clues, e.g. I was able to get 2km away to a place in Spain. My 13 year old boy will love this!

Ever come across this site? Some fun stuff:
