As ever, the Wiki has addressed this question: http://www.elviscostello.info/wiki/index.php/Wise_Up_Ghost_samples_and_quotes It also informs us that Welsh bassist and veteran of many different acts Pino Palladino plays bass on If I Could Believe and sugar Won't Work: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pin...

Re: New album for 2013: "Wise Up Ghost" (with The Roots!)

Grrr, ordered off Amazon Marketplace. Nagiry was one option. Used them before, they were fine, but they only had 1 in stock, so I thought one of you lot would beat me to it and tried 'Marvelio-UK' thinking the name was a giveaway, but the despatch dates make it look like US supply: Your estimated de...

Re: New album for 2013: "Wise Up Ghost" (with The Roots!)

After all my Old Skool trumpeting about hauling my ass down to lovely Fopp, I did, and the bastards only had the regular edition for £10. They went to check the morning's deliveries, no sign, so they took my name and said they'd set one aside. I said fine then asked how much, £20 bloody quid. First ...

Re: EC & The Roots play New York's Brooklyn Bowl, Sep. 16, 2

Great to have al the YouTube links and to be able to download it. I had it all cued up in the office at 5pm when the finance director came round to discuss an important mattler... Didn't miss too much. I don't like trying to work and listen to music, especially scintillating music I haven't heard be...

Didn't know Pete was on that! Must check it out.

If anyone wants to order the Deluxe online for a decent price in/from the UK, there are two Amazon Mktplace options on at £9.56 + £1.26 p+p.

Brilliant! Great to see Ghost Town (but didn't hear any Gansters intro, BA). Thanks very much. Going to try and listen to the WFUV broadcast today at work.

Re: New album for 2013: "Wise Up Ghost" (with The Roots!)

Came home expecting to find Verbal, Sulky and whoever else celebrating the UK release. Where are you? A couple of people on the 'countdown' thread only. For my own part my glorious plans to 'rush my money to the record shops' went pear-shaped due to about 5 too many issues to deal with at work. So I...

Re: 40 DAYS OF ELVIS COSTELLO: A Countdown To WISE UP GHOST

Thanks Connor for your immense amount of hard work compiling all this. A labour of love, I'm sure, but a very time-intensive one. I will keep the final index bookmarked forever and spend a lot more time than I've been able to of late. Even though I own pretty well almost all the released material an...

Re: 40 DAYS OF ELVIS COSTELLO: A Countdown To WISE UP GHOST

Neil: I know devotees of 70s Bowie who won't go near his current stuff, but I would cite Where Are We Now? as the best song I've heard this year. Certainly the most moving. You should get The Next Day . It's not up there with the earlier stuff, but it works well as a whole and has several great song...

Re: New album for 2013: "Wise Up Ghost" (with The Roots!)

I think Costello went out of his way to make NR something special, and he promoted the hell out of it, only to have it get a kind of shrug-- the usual mix of good and bad reviews that pretty much every Costello record gets now, but no lingering energy keeping it in the conversation, and poor sales....

Re: New album for 2013: "Wise Up Ghost" (with The Roots!)

There was certainly hesitation and disappointment following the commercial failure of National Ransom. I desperately hope history is not repeated. Was there? Where was that expressed? I thought Costello was well passed caring about sales as a measure of anything. He has a big enough fan base to kee...

Re: books, books, books

Good review, at least he's not a prejudiced moron. No, didn't know about Joanna N, and just been checking out and commenting on her being sampled by the Roots. Excellent, can't wait to see. If PTA nails the distinct atmosphere of the era and the Pynchonic sense of goofball comedy mixed with a dash o...

Re: New album for 2013: "Wise Up Ghost" (with The Roots!)

It's the Roots version of Masters of War with Captain Kirk on vocals and a little bit of Machine Gun. I'm pretty thankful I got to see this and The Seed performed live. Well it does say 'Drum Off' at the back! Brilliantly original. And Captain Kirk has a great voice as well as guitar skills (lovely...

Re: New album for 2013: "Wise Up Ghost" (with The Roots!)

I'm so glad that he seems to have shaken off or incorporated the last couple of years of hesitation, disappointment and mourning and produced something quite beautiful. For me the last couple of years, or 16 months, since I saw the Spinning Songbook, have been characterised by some very exuberant p...

Re: New album for 2013: "Wise Up Ghost" (with The Roots!)

Nearly caved in and went for the WOWHD 13% off for Friday 13th and then had a vision of Fopp going out of business and a guilt attack and held out. Popped into Fopp today and their bloody list of what's out on 16th makes no sodding mention of the most significant release of the day by a few miles. ...

Re: books, books, books

The Guardian follow suit with another Pynchon-agnostic dissing the new work: http://www.theguardian.com/books/2013/sep/13/bleeding-edge-thomas-pynchon-review Very poor review. The comments on it are much more impressive. He's right about the divisive nature of TRP's work. So why not get someone who ...

Re: What are you listening to right now?

Am planning to on the strength of its acclaim. I've only heard the single/title track, which did sound like a return to the past. I think the first album stands up very well. Take Me Out is a regular in the sets of the covers band I play in and it always goes down well.

Interesting. Here's an account of this misquote. I can just hear Elvis adding 'There's also a negative side' as one of his well-rehearsed onstage quips:

Yet this effect is in turn ruined by what might be one of the laziest, most insipid set-up lines he's penned My my it's a terrible disgrace You bet it is - lazy writing incarnate. Talk about anti-climax. Fortunately, the "howling in a vacuum" part reclaims some of the ferocity of the pre-...
