Shadow & Jimmy

As I gave a re-listen to the Rhino issue of King of America I finally read the liner notes. The last paragraph refered to a tune written by Elvis and David Was. The song found it's way on the Was (Not Was) album, What Up, Dog? which I had. It must be twenty years since I put on that cd and so I had ...

Will there be one? Be great if there was one.

I had my iPad on shuffle and the song "I Threw It All Away" came on by Elvis. Next was 'I Threw It All Away" by Ramblin' Jack Elliot.

Re: EC & Imposters - Tue, Nov 1, 2016, Pittsburgh, Heinz Hall

The Pittsburgh Symphony has been on strike for a couple of weeks and so they are walking the picket line outside Heinz Hall. All the symphonies for October have been cancelled. They say all the non-symphony events will continue at Heinz, but they're aren't any scheduled until Elvis.

Re: New Gig Thread

Mountain Stage came to Pittsburgh last night and it was a dandy show. The headliners were Billy Bragg and Joe Henry doing some selections from their recent album, Shine A Light . The album is all cover songs about trains and train travel. The evening also included Chris Smithers, Kaia Kater, Robert ...

Re: Recently viewed films

A 2014 film that I wished I would have caught on the big screen is Hayao Miyazaki's The Wind Rises . The film is about Jiro who dreams of designing airplanes. Because the film takes place in Japan's war time, his creations are used for destructive purposes. The animation is breathtaking, but the fil...

You wouldn't think they'de be playing Heinz Hall, but I last saw Sufjan there so I shouldn't be too surprised. I haven't been to a concert yet this year owing to a broken wrist, but I will probably go to this one.

Re: Recently viewed films

The Lobster is a strange film, but I liked it. Some people leaving the theatre said it was the worst film they had ever seen. The best way I could describe this film is imangine that Wes Anderson, Charlie Kaufmann, and Sam Beckett made a film together. Dark, dark humor. No emotion in the acting, bu...

Caught the 2015 film The Man Who Knew Infinity with Dev Pattel and Jeremy Irons. The film is about two mathematicians, Srinivasa Ramanujan and G.H. Hardy. A beautiful film much like A Beutiful Mind . What I took away from this film was, that like art and music, mathematics can be perceived coming fr...

All weekend I listened to 'old timey' music. On Saturday I listened to all three discs of Harry Smith's box set Anthology of Folk Music. On Sunday, I listened to Hal Wilner's two CD set The Harry Smith Project.

Re: Elvis & Imposters, New Orleans Jazzfest, April 28, 2016

A big day for JFers are when the cubes come out and today was the day. The cubes are the schedule of when and what stage each artist will perform. I'm sure all the festival goers are making schedules of who they will see and their FOMS (fear of missing something). This year Elvis is closing out one ...
