Re: Happy Birthday Elvis

Happy Birthday, Declan.

Even if he doesn't check in his ears will be burning because we are talking about him.

Re: What are you listening to right now?

Ever since I got rid of my tape cassettes to graduate to CDs, I've been looking for Joe Jackson's Night and Day . I found it the other night at B&N and couldn't wait to listen to it after all these years. As soon as 'Another World' began to play memories of a younger me came. I forgot how good t...

The Way Way Back is a nice, light-hearted film that is deserving of all the praise it is getting. Sam Rockwell stands out.

Re: Recently viewed films

I thoroughly enjoyed Joss Whedon's re-telling of Wm. Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing . Beautifully shot in blackand white and all at Joss' house in twelve days, the movie is lighthearted and has some witty scenes. Nathan Fillione does a good character as a bumbling detective(who would have thou...

As I sit writing this, I am watching a documentary about the singer/songwriter Paul Williams on Showtime On Demand. It is well done. Paul seems a little bit crazy.

The Soul Rebels put on an excellent party. One small stage, two trumpets, two trombones, one sousaphone, one saxophone, and two percussionists.

I just watched a documentary on Henry Ford on PBS. Most surprising thing I learnt is that he was anti-Semitic.

I guess Kim and Kanye are fans of Elvis'. Why else would they name their baby after one of his albums?

Ludovico Einaudi

I caught this artist on Later w/Jools Holland. I did not catch the song title, but it was good enough for me to want to hear more. There is nothing but glowing reviews of him and his albums on Amazon. Has anyone heard of him? Any album suggestions?

The Harpsichord

I recently saw the Pgh Symphony Orchestra, or rather, a chamber version of the orchestra, conducted by Jeannette Sorrell doing all sex Brandenburg Concertos. Jeanette conducted all six pieces and played the harpsichord on a few of them. It got me thinking about the harpsichord in popular music. I ca...

Re: Recent CD Purchases

After many years of hearing about the under appreciated songwriter Laura Nyro I found one of her CDs in a $5 bin. Eli and the Thirteenth Confession is a beautiful sounding album. For an album released in 1968 it sounds as fresh as relevant as today's offerings.

Rather enjoyed Robert Redford's new film The Company You Keep. Many good actors in it: Redford, Julie Christie, Stanley Tucci, Richard Jenkins, Chris Cooper, Brendan Gleeson, Nick Nolte, and Susan Sarandon.

Re: New Gig Thread

Saw the exquisite and very talented Bettye LaVette. It was a very crowded jazz club and she mesmerized us all. She was backed up by a five piece band. Her voice is full of emotion and you can feel her pain. Not only has she a set of pipes on her (especially for a petite woman) she is a cool lady. Fo...

Elvis and Cait wrote a song for Robert Altman's Short Cuts. It is called 'Pushing Kiss' and is performed by Annie Ross & The Low Note Quintet. Annie plays a jazz singer in the film and she sings this song on stage.

Re: Recently viewed films

At about three hours long, Robert Altman's Short Cuts is difficult to sit through. The movie is at times slow and nothing really happens. It's a movie about a group of people living their lives the best that they can. For the first two hours I was wondering when will something spectacular happen. I ...

Saw Beasts of the Southern Wild last night. Really enjoyed it. I enjoyed Jennifer L.'s performance in Silver Lining Playbook, but I believe Quvenzhané was robbed. I understand that an eight year old shouldn't have an Oscar though. She will get her's in time.

BassBuds

I have the habit of losing my earbuds and when I do use them I only listen to talking podcasts so I had never spent over $10.00 on them. That was until Groupon advertised BassBuds for $20.00. After reading the reviews on Amazon I took the chance and ordered two of them. About a week later I received...
