Re: What is 'The Beat' about ?

Interesting, never thought of it that way. Similar to The Undertones "Teenage Kicks" ("Are teenage dreams so hard to beat...?"), though they denied it.

Re: National Ransom - New Album Due Nov. 2

Listening to the song again, it IS striking that Steve Nieve is essentially playing "You Belong To Me" all the way through it. And I'm tremendously pleased to hear Costello self-harmonizing with himself again... Can you self-harmonise with anyone else? I believe its possible to play...

Re: UK tour 2010

[quote="sheeptotheslaughter"]quote] Quite possibly, his "Irishness" seemed to wax and wane a bit. I suppose the 96 game was a particularly big one, as England v Germany at Wembley, in a semi-final, was a biggie. IIRC the barn next door to the Stadium was showing the match on a bi...

Re: UK tour 2010

Why does he insist on having gigs the same day as big footie matches? Elvis supports Ireland so he won't be watching the World Cup. (maybe) I know when he played the Festival Hall a few years back England were playing a World Cup qualifier against Turkey I think. We went there around 8 thinking he ...

Re: The Costello Show Live Project

I was at that Royalty show, too. My memory is that Instant Karma/Poor Napoleon was played in darkness with occasional strobe lighting - very disconcerting (and probably illegal now due to photo sensitive epilepsy).

Re: Elvis sings The Beatles

Saw him do Leave my kitten alone at the Royalty shows in 86. he must have been going through a Beatles/Lennon phase as he also did All you need is love, Instant Karma, Yes it is and Twist and Shout around that time - as well as the vocal steal from Anna (Go with him) on Blue Chair

Elvis sings The Beatles

What with all this Beatles melarkey, which of their songs has EC covered? I can think of:

You've got to hide youre love away
Yes it is
She's a woman
Hey Bulldog
All you need is love

And covered some of their covers:

Twist and shout
Slow down
Money

Any others?

Re: Memories and images of Elvis in Ireland, March 1978

I was at the Belfast gig in 1978. It was St Patricks Day, though then (as now) that wasn't as big a deal in Belfast as it was in Dublin and elsewhere. My memories of the gig are a little hazy as I'd spent the afternoon at my school's rugby final (which was a big deal - the school had only reached th...

Not sure how relevant this is, but Terrence Rattigan had a successful hit with his play (and film)"French without tears" in the 1930's.

He did Pump it up on the 8 April 1999 show as well as a short interview (in which EC "fan" Johnny Vaughan referred to his song "Tramp down the dirt")

John, I have this on dvd, transferred from vhs a year or two back. If I get a chance, I'll pop it onto YouTube. From memory, EC also did PIU on a previous Big Breakfast - and hadn't he played at Johnnie Vaughan's wedding or somesuch?
