I loved White Teeth but hated On Beauty , though I wanted to love it. Very meh on the one in the middle, whose title escapes me at the moment. I love Murakami... as long as things are happening. When things aren't happening, I lose interest. Currently reading Ishiguro's When We Were Orphans --it's n...

Re: Recent CD Purchases
Broke a summer of abstinence from CD-buying (I was waiting for an Amazon credit, plus nothing exciting was being released) to order:
Dengue Fever - Venus on Earth
The Hold Steady - Stay Positive
Josef K - Entomology
Beirut - The Flying Club Cup
Haven't gotten a chance to listen to any of it yet...

David Foster Wallace RIP
I'm still shaken by this one. Infinite Jest was one of my favorite books as a teenager. If being the greatest writer of your generation doesn't bring happiness... (I know it's a trite thing to say, but I am sad and trite today.)

I am so late to this particular party... in the office alone today and thought I'd check it out. I have an Elvis Costello station, but it seems to be stuck in the 80s. Might have to make an Of Montreal station and see what happens...

Just read Get Shorty because it was on the list... I think I may have read it before. Too long ago to remember anything, but I would get a feeling about something that was going to happen, and then two lines later, it would. And I don't think Elmore Leonard is that predictable. Now reading John Fowl...

I just had to do that (use subtitles) for The Wind that Shakes the Barley , which is a fascinating movie. Though incomprehensible at times. I liked The Dark Knight , but it was definitely too long. I don't like my summer movies to be more than 2 hours--I get all squirmy. Heath Ledger was indeed grea...

I went last night! Awesome, though it was kind of weird to see Elvis playing to a half-empty house, as people filtered in. I'd never been to a concert at Jones Beach before, it was much nicer than I expected. Also surprised to see so many people wearing Police t-shirts--I've always been under the im...

My brother was admitted to a hospital last night with really severe pain - sounds like he's getting his gall bladder out today or tomorrow. I know it's a very routine and considered a fairly minor surgery - but it sure makes me wish I didn't live 2500 miles away! My grandpa has the same ailment, Re...

Got over my relative disdain for Portnoy's Complaint (thankfully) and picked up a couple of Roth books on board suggestions. So glad I did. American Pastoral was utterly fantastic and I'm halfway through the wonderful The Plot Against America . The writing in the former is so beautiful and evocativ...

Finally saw Sex & the City, which was... exactly like watching five episodes of the show in a row. I liked it, but it was definitely ridiculous. My theatermates were snickering just as much as I was, which was refreshing.

I didn't count it twice, that would be cheating! I don't usually read twice (in fact, I usually give books away when I am done), but I thought I would like to revisit this one... I guess I was wrong.

Saw Fat Girl last night... what a strange movie. I'm not quite sure what to think of it, and that ending was not what I was expecting. Which I guess was the point. Has anyone else seen it?

I like it - with a ready reckoner for how many books a year you have to read to complete the list! That list is really handy. I started putting the text, copied as a continuous paragraph into a proper list in Word, and colour coding: Bold = ‘I’ve read it’ Blue = ‘I’ve got it, but haven’t read it ye...
