"Milo Lewis"

It is with deep sadness and the very fondest memories that we must report the passing of Milo Lewis.

To describe Milo merely as our "Production Manager" does a severe disservice to the huge numbers of stages, adventures and miles along the road that we have shared.

He was our pal, someone our sons and daughters had known since their childhood.

The consensus among everyone who has been kind enough to call or write, over the last thirty-six hours since his passing, is that he was a "stand-up fellow" and "damn good egg", while another close colleague said how much she would miss that "silly old sausage".

If all of this seems sentimental and arcane, so be it.

Milo combined a unique, funny, hard-working, unflustered approach to getting the stage prepared and then on to the next whistlestop, mixed with a profound love of life and mischief.

He was a kind friend to the very many cohorts that he encountered in the backstage world, a well-read, bon viveur, loyal Hammers fan and man of the Isle of Wight.

He was the father of Rosie and Poppy.

In the last ten years, he became a New Yorker and lived in Brooklyn with his second wife Tracey, who he met when we were working in Mississippi.

To Pete Thomas, Steve Nieve and I, Milo had just always been there and we assumed he always would be.

1981, Milo made a striking cameo appearance in the video for "Clubland". In those days, he split his working time between our tours and leading the charge with Nick Lowe and his various cowboy outfits. He took over our production manager role in 1983, sharing and sometimes suffering our transition from boys to men, from Attractions to Playboys and on to become Imposters.

He was as familiar with the scent of blood and sawdust venues as he was able to negotiate the manners of symphony hall concerts, unfazed by the challenges of the Spectacular Spinning Songbook, tours with the Brodsky Quartet, Allen Toussaint and The Sugarcanes, not to mention the nightly deconstruction of the "Detour" set.

He had many friends among the crews of "The Last Resort", during our long association with the "Letterman" shows and "Spectacle" and among many, many other bands of gentlemen and pirates whose paths we crossed.

I know that Pete, Steve, Davey and myself will be joined by all our crew, past and present but especially, Robbie, Paddy, Gill, Steve, Toast, Fern, Zak, Tim and everyone else at our management, agency, financial, transport and travel offices in sending our love and deepest condolences to Tracey and all of Milo's family and massive circle of friends.

He is, in so many ways, irreplaceable but we must go on and onward we shall go.

ELVIS Costello has paid tribute to his former production manager, Islander Milo Lewis, who died this week.

In a statement on his website the musician, whose hits include Radio, Radio and Oliver’s Army, said: "To describe Milo merely as our "Production Manager" does a severe disservice to the huge numbers of stages, adventures and miles along the road that we have shared.
"He was our pal, someone our sons and daughters had known since their childhood."

He added: "Milo combined a unique, funny, hard-working, unflustered approach to getting the stage prepared and then on to the next whistlestop, mixed with a profound love of life and mischief.

"He was a kind friend to the very many cohorts that he encountered in the backstage world, a well-read, bon viveur, loyal Hammers fan and man of the Isle of Wight.
"He was the father of Rosie and Poppy."

Originally from Newport, he had most recently lived in Brooklyn, New York, with his second wife Tracey.

Elvis paid tribute to former Carisbrooke High School student Milo’s versatility, commenting: "He was as familiar with the scent of blood and sawdust venues as he was able to negotiate the manners of symphony hall concerts, unfazed by the challenges of the Spectacular Spinning Songbook, tours with the Brodsky Quartet, Allen Toussaint and The Sugarcanes, not to mention the nightly deconstruction of the 'Detour’ set."

Mr Milo Guy Lewis
By Jon Moreno

Friday, February 26, 2016

FORMER Islander Milo Guy Lewis, who was production manager to legendary rock star Elvis Costello, died suddenly at his home in New York City, on Wednesday, last week, aged 61.

Mr Lewis, who grew up in Yarmouth, worked for the recording artist for more than 40 years.

He moved up through the ranks to become his production manager in 1983 — a job that saw him travel the world on tours, make lifelong friends and even put an appearance in Elvis’s video for the hit single, Clubland.

Born in Stratford-upon-Avon, Mr Lewis was the youngest of four children to Michael and Judy Lewis and the family moved to the West Wight when he was two.

His father was a veterinary surgeon and his mother was Bob Dylan’s housekeeper during the original IW Festivals between 1968 and 1970.

Educated at Yarmouth Primary and Carisbrooke Grammar schools, his first jobs included being a baker and a painter and decorator.

His love of music and sense of adventure saw him move to London to pursue his dream of working in the music business.

He got a job at Stiff Records, where he met Elvis Costello and the Attractions, among the leading lights of the New Wave movement and major artists on the fledgling label.

Mr Lewis had a 30-year relationship with Fliss, who he met on the Island when he was aged 19. They settled in Freshwater, had daughters, Poppy and Rosie, and later moved to Calbourne.

The couple bought land in Newtown, which was home to horses, sheep and held lively parties with friends and family over the years.

Later in life, Mr Lewis married Tracey Thomas in a beach ceremony in Barbados in 2006 and they lived in Brooklyn.

Although he lived in the United States, he enjoyed many return visits to the UK to see family and friends, to go to West Ham football matches and especially, to spend time with his grandsons.

A life-long Hammers fan, he would join friends in the fans’ group, The NYC Hammers, to watch televised matches.

There will be celebrations of his life in New York and on the Island, with the dates yet to be confirmed.

He is survived by his daughters, two grandsons, father and siblings Kevin and Jenny Lewis, and Sue Oldershaw
