Also at the Gentilly Stage, the Dirty Dozen showed their versatility, playing some of their most popular songs, including a long instrumental "Blackbird Special" and closing with "My Feet Can't Fail Me Now." The band also showed its command of New Orleans R&B, playing Dr. John's "Right Time Wrong Place" and "Hey Pocky Way."

The set was billed as a tribute to Dave Bartholomew, who died in 2019. The tribute didn't start until about 40 minutes in, when Al "Lil Fats" Jackson came on to sing "I'm Walking," which Bartholomew co-wrote with Fats Domino. Jackson then sang "Blue Monday," also written by Bartholomew. Both songs rested on the keyboard playing of Jackson and the sax of the Dirty Dozen's Roger Lewis.

Then Elvis Costello came onstage. Costello had a fortuitous relationship with Allen Toussaint following Hurricane Katrina, when they recorded "The River in Reverse" and toured together. The Bartholomew tribute was less harmonious. Costello came on to sing Bartholomew's beguiling 1957 song, "The Monkey Speaks His Mind." At first, Costello's mic wasn't working, so the band decided to start over. But even with a working mic, Costello's cadence on the song was rounded out and did little to highlight Bartholomew's great lyrics.

Costello did a much better job on "Before I Grow Too Old," a tune composed by Bartholomew, Domino and Bobby Charles.

Overall, the Bartholomew songs weren't the best performed ones in the set. But the Dirty Dozen was impressive before and after that portion.

[Roger] Lewis then hustled to the Shell Gentilly Stage to join his Dirty Dozen bandmates for their salute to Dave Bartholomew, the Fats Domino producer and songwriter who died at age 100 in 2019. Lewis played in Domino’s band for many years, so he knew his way around “I’m Walkin’” – especially with Domino soundalike Al “Lil Fats” Jackson on piano and vocals.

Elvis Costello, dapper despite the heat, got into character for Bartholomew’s “The Monkey Speaks Its Mind”; Gregory Davis muted his trumpet with a plunger for a solo. Costello played it straighter for “Before I Grow Too Old,” a 1960 single written by Bartholomew, Domino and Bobby Charles. With the many horns of the Dirty Dozen, “Before I Grow Too Old” felt spry.

KSQD to broadcast jazz festival from New Orleans
By Staff Report - May 3, 2022

SANTA CRUZ—Santa Cruz community radio station KSQD 90.7 FM will broadcast and stream three days of the internationally-acclaimed New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival this weekend.

The broadcast and stream will begin Friday 11am-4pm, continue on Saturday noon-5pm and end Sunday 11am-5pm. Artists include Chris Isaac, Boz Scaggs, The Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Elvis Costello, Stevie Nicks, Erykah Baydu, Melissa Ethridge, Jimmy Buffet, Willie Nelson, Norah Jones, Buddy Guy and more.

The festival will also be available to listen to online at ksqd.org.

KSQD is a nonprofit station licensed by Natural Bridges Media, broadcasting on a 24/7 basis by mostly volunteers. Since the start-up launched in February 2019, its sole means of financial support has been donations from individual listeners, educational grants and underwriting.

For information about the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, and a complete schedule of performances visit nojazzfest.com.
Guess they are not broadcasting EC, at least not live. Think he is supposed to be onstage now. Maybe they will record it and archive it, or maybe not. If anyone comes across it, please record it if you can.

Meanwhile, Elvis Costello brought up swamp pop great Tommy McLain during his Gentilly Stage headlining show for a couple of songs, including "I Ran Down Every Dream," a new tune from McLain's upcoming album of the same name.

From the New Orleans Jazz Fest to New England: 13 electrifying artists there who’ll be coming here

(…)
Elvis Costello, who has a big-time affinity for N’awlins, and his band the Imposters thundered from the Gentilly Stage like a sophisticated ‘60s garage band. Costello is such a good songwriter that there is no fall-off during his shows; new tracks instantly sounded like old favorites. With Charlie Sexton on lead guitar and swamp pop heroes Tommy McLain and CC Adcock sitting in for a few tunes, the set included “Watching the Detectives,” “Penelope Halfpenny,” “Allison,” and “Wake Me Up” before ending with the one-two punch of “Pump It Up” and the Nick Lowe gem “(What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding.”
