In ieders geheugen staan Elvis’ legendarische songs 'Alison’, 'Pump It Up’ en 'Everyday I Write The Book’ gegrift.

If only they could play Unwanted Number. It was already a favourite on the Grace Of My Heart sound track.
But the version on Look Now is even better.

Anyone understand why there's not one, but TWO shows in Antwerp of all places? This on a tour where he's snubbing, among others, Berlin, the cultural capital (also the actual capital) of Germany?

RECENSIE. Elvis Costello & The Imposters: wisselvallig, maar bevlogen

Daar stonden helaas bijna evenveel uitschuivers tegenover.

    ————————————————-

REVIEW. Elvis Costello & The Imposters: changeable, but inspired

The last time Elvis Costello played in the OLT (four years ago), the rest of his European tour was canceled the next day because the singer was diagnosed with prostate cancer. That has now been conquered, so Costello is releasing records again at his usual pace and touring like a young foal that still has everything to prove. The OLT quickly sold out twice yesterday and today.

The OLT website quoted a review calling Costello the Bob Dylan of the post-punk generation. With all due respect to Dylan, but he has never been able to match Costello's versatility. From punk to classical, folk to jazz, country to hip-hop, from opera to film soundtracks… There are now few genres that the man who is actually called Declan MacManus has not ventured into.

Costello recently released his thirty-second (!) album with 'The Boy Named if', which was received unanimously positively. Still, that fresh material didn't even make up a quarter of the set list. Logical, because just like Paul McCartney -with whom he regularly collaborates- the British musician has written enough classics over the past four decades to fill an entire jukebox. Only those also only seep in sporadically. On stage, Costello was assisted by The Imposters, who were supplemented for the occasion by former Dylan guitarist Charlie Sexton. An added value, that's for sure.

Those who had hoped that Costello would perform as well as last time in OLT could not help but be a little disappointed. Not only because the indestructible hits as mentioned above were only played sparingly, but also because they usually didn't get their best performance. And that had less to do with the band - each and every one of them old friends - than with Costello himself, who occasionally reeled his best-known songs very much into routine.

There were exceptions. 'Watching The Detectives' floated on the familiar reggae beat, but a whole new song was edited into it. And in "Good Year For The Roses," Costello's slightly husky country sob kept you on your toes, too. Nice that Costello and his Imposters had mastered both traditional blues ('Big Stars have Tumbled') and fifties rock 'n' roll ('Mystery Dance'). Unfortunately, there were almost as many outliers. 'The Angels Wanna Wear My Red Shoes' was a complete mess, and 'Alison' also sounded dull and stale. Fortunately, things were straightened out by the indestructible 'I Want You', which, aided by a few searing guitar solos from Costello and Sexton, turned out to be good for goosebumps and chills.

And so our concerns have been put into perspective again: going to see Costello is of course never a punishment. Only he has set the bar so unreal high in the (roughly) twenty previous concerts of his that we have seen, that a day that is slightly less, immediately turns into a disappointment.

It was a great gig, but…
A lot of the people who came to see him in this open air amphitheater, wouldn’t necessarily go to see him in a “regular” theatre. Going to the Rivierenhof is part of summer entertainment. Most of the people only know his classic songs and are unaware of the existence of Hey Clockface or The Boy Named If.
Elvis played also three unreleased songs: “Big Stars Are Tumbling”, “Maybe Just This Once” and “Tipsy Woman” and a Japanes B-side: “Truth Drug” (which were the highlights for me). So you felt a little disappointment around you because of the lack of songs that people knew.
Of course, Elvis rectified this with the finale that started with “Chelsea” and ended with “I Want You”!
For me, a great gig, and other highlights include “Hetty O’Hara Confidential”, “No Flag”, “Mystery Dance” and “The Man You Love To Hate”.

The first two songs they were searching for the right balance, after that it was fine from where I was sitting (3th row center).
