Elvis & The Imposters with Nick Lowe & Los Straitjackets, Beacon Theatre, New York, NY, July 12, 2023

Post by Man out of Time »

Elvis and The Imposters, with Charlie Sexton, return to the Beacon Theatre, New York on Wednesday, July 12, 2023. Nick Lowe, and Los Straightjackets support.

Elvis and The Imposters last played there for two nights in 2016, but more recently (in 2019) Elvis made a guest appearance there at the 35th anniversary screening of This Is Spinal Tap.

The show appears to be nearly sold out with a few tickets left at $90 (plus fees), some dearer "platinum" tickets costing more than $400 and some seats reserved for City National Bank Cardholders at an unspecified price.

Who's going?

From Bridgeport, CT to Philadelphia, PA, Elvis Costello & The Imposters – already augmented by guitarist, Charlie Sexton – will also be joined by a horn section featuring trumpet player/arranger, Michael Leonhart,
saxophonist, Donny McCaslin and the trombonist, Ray Mason.

SECOND NYC SHOW ADDED BEACON THEATER – THURSDAY JULY 13

Nick Lowe & Los Straitjackets To Open All Dates.

These horn players first joined Costello over two shows of the “100 Songs & More” stand, his acclaimed 10-night engagement at the Gramercy Theatre, NYC, at which over 230 titles were performed, most of them original compositions with only three titles being repeated.

Michael Leonhart wrote or adapted horn arrangements for a variety of Costello’s songs featured from “Pills & Soap”, “Almost Blue” and “Come The Meantimes”.

On NIGHT NINE, Leonhart became the first trumpet player to take the solo on “Shipbuilding” since Chet Baker’s original performance on the studio recording in 1983 before leading the horn section into the sequel song, “Cinco Minutos Con Vos”, first recorded for “Wise Up Ghost” with The Roots.

Donny McCaslin is a saxophonist, composer and bandleader whose recordings include his trio album “Recommended Tools”, “Fast Forward” and his vital contribution to David Bowie’s final album, “Blackstar”.

McCaslin raised the emotional pitch of NIGHT EIGHT at the Gramercy Theatre with a passionate tenor saxophone solo in the coda of Costello’s ballad, “Someone Took The Words Away”.

Ray Mason is a trombonist, arranger and member of Antibalas as well as having featured in numerous ensembles and concert collaborations with artists from Erykah Badu and Randy Newman to Taylor Swift and Valerie June. He was among the players accompanying Jennifer Lopez and Shakira at the 2020 Super-Bowl Half-Time show, so is unlikely to be confounded by any of The Imposters’ dance moves.

In 2020, Elvis Costello wrote lyrics for a Michael Leonhart composition that became “Newspaper Pane” after Costello had provided the spoken word performance to Leonhart’s recorded collaboration with Bill Frisell and Nels Cline which became, “Radio Is Everything” on Costello’s “Hey Clockface” album before writing the lyrics and recording vocals for “Shut Him Down” from The Michael Leonhart Orchestra release, “The Normyn Suites”.

Looking forward to it. Haven't been to the Beacon since the Imperial Bedroom and Other Chambers tour.

And still with a small glimmer of hope that we'll see a surprise Hoover Factory. :D

But many more partial clips WORTH being seen too at my Instagram page. Such variations on a theme by Elvis made me want to share how great the night was...but i do hate filming from too far back. bennyagostinoyourbronxapostle is my IG account, I think. :)

Possession, licorice and comedians were highlights for me

Vocal challenges apparent to my ears on a few (e.g. Toledo, high fidelity)

I mistakenly posted comments in the wrong show thread, but I concur that The Comedians was fantastic. He nailed the Orbison vibe.

Fun night last night.

Nick Lowe and Lost Straightjackets were great as always. Nick looks so happy playing with them, and they look happy playing with him. Positive energy all around. If you're going tonight, be on time, as Nick comes on promptly at 7:30. We missed the first song because of the line at the metal detector. The crowd was very supportive throughout, with a couple of different standing ovations and a big thank you after the last song was played.

Elvis put together a great set list for the evening. As he said at the beginning, they would be playing a different type of show with the horns as part of the mix. The horn players (hornists? hornies?) were on stage for the whole show, only stepping aside when the spotlight was on Steve. I think some of the casual fans were a little less impressed with the song choices, but the enthusiastic playing won some of them over. A few others around me who remained unconvinced took their leave early.

I thought the sound mix was a little off for the first couple of songs. I could hardly hear Steve's parts on Pills and Soap and Possession (despite us sitting on his side of the stage). Things started to come together on Newspaper Pane, with Pete's bass drum driving the song forward. You could feel the whole thing starting to come together.

As noted above, Elvis' voice was a little hoarse and off for some of the earlier numbers like Alison and Toledo, but it improved as the night went on. The singing on Almost Blue sounded great--perhaps the spirit of Burt was pushing Elvis on. And with the horn arrangement on Toledo you could definitely feel Burt's presence.

I Do (Zula's Song) was one of my favorites of the night. Elvis introduced it as a tango, and you could hear it as the song kicked in. The horn line stuck in my head as I rode the train home. The Comedians coming right after seemed to be an audible, as the guitar tech was coming to take Elvis guitar, but he shooed him away. He said that it was time to play a bolero.

I'm not the biggest North fan, but the arrangement of Someone Took The Words Away helped to raise that album up a notch last night. Really good use of the horn section here. High Fidelity was a nice mood shift and a short, punchy pick-me-up that is always welcome.

One of the songs that benefitted the most from the augmented lineup was Mr. & Mrs Hush, which fit right in the mold of a High Fidelity or Peace, Love, and Understanding. A nice surprise, and very high energy. Back in the day, it might have closed the first part of the show, with three encores still to follow.

Pete started playing the opening of Chelsea, and Elvis turned around--my guess is they were going to play Pump It Up and maybe Pete hadn't heard. Everyone started clapping and Elvis asked if we wanted to hear that one--big cheers. So Chelsea it was. And a very enthusiastic Chelsea too! Accidents Will Happen was the slow piano version, with just the Imposters. Elvis had huddled with the horn trio while we were still clapping for Chelsea, and you could see they were working something out. When the song got to the "I know" coda, the horn players came back out and the song kicked in to the album version. That was a neat trick, and seemed to have been arranged on the spot. Poisoned Rose had another great horn arrangement that lifted the song. Really, I can't say enough about this lineup.

My son and I (attending his first Elvis show) were so happy that Nick came out for PLU. The warm reception from the audience tonight practically demanded it, and he looked pleased as punch to be up there. I smiled when we got the bridge and Nick delivered the "peace rap." It completed the evening.

As a long-time Elvis fan, I enjoyed this show quite a bit, with some of newer songs being brought to life with the full band. Casual fans may not have been as thrilled.

I'm glad I was able to make it happen on a hot summer NYC night.

Looking forward to hearing about the last two shows of this tour--and of Elvis and Steve in the fall!

Nicely written Harry.... and spot on regarding all that you surmise; I concur. It was a freaking amazing night. And I do always love any song played ANY night from NORTH! This lineup deserves a revisit any old time. Great job to the three: Michael, Ray and Donny. oh, and the other five too. :D

Thanks all for the nice comments. I saw in another thread someone mention that we don't seem to write many detailed reports from the shows, so figured I'd try to record some more of my thoughts and resurrect that practice.

I've been thinking about the fans who come to Elvis shows, especially at bigger venues like the Beacon (vs the Gramercy). There's a big group who come to hear Alison and Pump It Up and maybe a couple of others. Elvis always at least includes 4 or 5 of those songs in every show, and oftentimes more. But there is the vast trove of catalogue songs that another group of fans are eager to hear. The shows this summer lean more to those fans, it seems. There were a few crowd pleasers, as you say, KRM, but a lot of newer songs that were well played with interesting arrangements, but not ones casual fans would jump out of their seats for. (And I wonder where songs like High Fidelity and Almost Blue and even Shipbuilding fall on the crowd pleasers spectrum...) Even if people were unfamiliar with the songs, taking a moment to listen to how the songs were played and seeing the musicians themselves put on such a performance can be entertaining too.

A couple of additional musings, anyway...

And I neglected to mention Davey and Charlie in my original writeup. Davey's playing was great throughout--I especially enjoyed hearing some of the original influence on Possession, for instance, while digging his soaring runs on Mr & Mrs Hush. I always want to hear more Charlie. Besides playing the original parts on Alison, his textures add a lot to the performance. I'd love to see him rip a few more solos next time.

You know Harry.....I must accept guilt for what you speak on here. I too have become less verbose in detailing the actual show. I guess I feel like a blowhard, espousing my own opinion when no one should really care what i might feel. It is quite a fine line between being descriptive AND being a critic in waiting!! very glad you walk the fine line accordingly and i will try to rise to the occasion once again down the road perhaps. Thanks for your musings. Best, ba

I believe I was the person who raised about the lack of detailed reports.

Personally I am really glad that fans take the time to share their thoughts and provide detailed reviews of gigs.

I try to do the same when I attend.
