Why TF can't they give us a couple days' heads-up on these on-sale dates?! I check here and the EC Facebook page EVERY DAY, and this is the first I'm hearing about the Paris show...and all the good seats are already gone. WTF???

Can't they announce these shows BEFORE the tics go on sale???

This European dates in August and September have been "announced" in a haphazard way with, as you say, often no prior notice of tickets going on sale. An exception being Luxembourg, where the tickets are not available until July 13 for some reason. I only came across that date yesterday, when searching for press coverage of the Paris date. The venues in Paris and Luxembourg have the same name, so the Luxembourg date came up as a search result. The Luxembourg date is not yet listed on the "tour" page at Elviscostello.com.

It would have been easier if all the European dates had been announced at once, with a few days' notice before tickets went on sale. We do our best to share information when we have it, and are also reliant on Forum members sharing information here.

I am particularly grateful to sweetest punch for usually being the first to spot and share news of new concert dates here.

The musicians who played on most of Hey Clockface (billed as Le Quintette Saint Germain on that album) will perform in Paris.

So thanks to the amazing generosity of two lovely ladies, it seems I'm on my way for this special concert - where my car parking costs more than my hotel or my flight !
I'm amazingly excited about this show that's for sure !
Good post to make it 2400 too!

Review by Ordell Robbie published in Benzine magazine on September 26, 2023:

Le Watching the Detectives façon Trip Hop me faisait peur.

Translation via Google Translate:

"Live Report: Elvis Costello and Steve Nieve at the Philharmonie de Paris: Peace, Love and Understanding with Paris.

Despite predictable vocal limitations, this return of Costello to the capital in the company of the keyboard of Attractions had its beautiful moments, particularly at the end.

Before starting this report, a little reason for astonishment. For this first Costello concert in Paris since 2014, Declan Patrick MacManus benefited according to Le Figaro – which covered his Luxembourg set – from the partnership of 10 venues in continental Europe, including the Philharmonies de Paris and Luxembourg. Private promoters would apparently be reluctant to produce an artist who has not had great success on the Continent, an artist who would be above all “cult” and loved by critics. Which makes me tick knowing that we still hear Costello covering She by Charles Aznavour in the worldwide hit romcom Notting Hill.

Costello therefore returns to the capital in the company of Steve Nieve, keyboardist of Attractions and now French resident, in the not very rock'n'roll setting of the Philharmonie. I admit I dragged my feet getting to this concert because of the YouTube captures of the tour. The Trip Hop style Watching the Detectives scared me. Moreover, this concept of not always respectful rereading is a bit all or nothing, as Dylan showed live (fortunately for me the Grand Rex 4 years ago was one day “all” of the Nobel Prize for Literature. ). And above all the voice seems very worn, managing to spoil the emotion of She for me.

Costello and Nieve arrive on stage. The first will generally alternate electric and acoustic guitar (and a little bit of piano). He will have two microphones with a retro design that would have fit like a glove to the live performances of Dorothy Vallens' character in Blue Velvet. The second will play the piano, the synthesizer, a Melodica and what will be described by Costello as the “smallest accordion in the world” (he will even sing a little solo). Starting alone, they will eventually be joined by a cellist, a trumpeter, a clarinetist and a percussionist. The concert will also be one of long speeches around – among other things – the joy of finding Paris again, the memory of the great Bacharach, the meeting with Nieve during the formation of Attractions and the sources of inspiration for certain pieces. We will thus learn the link between Accidents will happen and listening to “the least sexy record in the world” (Dark Side of the Moon).

Before Waiting on the End of the World, Costello said that he wanted to make this live version sound like Suicide, but that ultimately it was not possible. Speeches slowing down the pace a little but contributing to the capital sympathy of the author of the brilliant Pump it up, just like his desire to make his musicians applaud first. First of all, the voice, although worn, was clearly less worse than what YouTube suggested. Waiting for the End of the World seems to suggest that the audience was not predominantly that of the rabid debut: Costello tried in vain to get the audience to sing the chorus, evoking Pete Doherty's past efforts a few meters away (Quoted of Music) to make Blue Moon hum with as little success to the audience present. But that won't stop the track's somewhat menacing synth arrangement from working.

When the other musicians arrive, the concert sinks a bit into a “Costello goes jazzy” routine. And the Trip Hop arrangement of Watching the detectives is perfect for waking up the concert. We will then be treated to an Accidents will Happen excellently accompanied on the piano, a moving She very applauded by the audience, the memory of the Falklands of the masterpiece Shipbuilding and a (What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding also very praised and energetic despite its non-“enraged” arrangement. The concert ends in “after Chris Isaak at the Olympia, artist who leaves the stage to join the audience volume 2” mode: Costello will sing without a microphone and will go halfway up the stands located at stage level, collecting a few spectators to do backing vocals on stage for the finale.

It wasn't a perfect concert but Costello, who thought he would never perform in France again, seemed happy to be there and to find a form of peace with a France with which he had a somewhat crude love affair. . So certainly, at the exit, a spectator seemed to regret the not very rock nature of this evening. But in any case this had already been announced when the tickets went on sale."
