Last Night...
...was one of those experiences you just can't quite believe after it's over.
Many of you know my cousin-in-law Caroline Baron is a film producer. She produced the amazing "Monsoon Wedding," and more recently "Capote," and was nominated for Best Picture for the latter. Her new production is "Bel Canto," which will be directed by Bernardo Bertolucci from the novel by Ann Patchett, and we're all excited by that.
But Caroline's better known in film circles for having started FilmAid International, which brings the power of film to refugee camps all around the world to educate, entertain, and bring hope. Last night was their first annual "Power of Film" Gala, in the Time Warner Center. My Aunt Madeline was one of the co-chairs of the event, and invited me along, even including me in the VIP portion of the evening, which was amazing.
The VIP portion involved a brief reception, then a screening of scenes from "God Grew Tired of Us," a new documentary about the "lost boys" of the Sudan, followed by a panel discussion on the power of film to change lives with panelists including Ken Burns, Al Maysles, Christopher Quinn, Ambassador Richard Holbrooke, and John Dau, one of the aforementioned lost boys. Danny Glover was there and briefly addressed the panel as well.
Then the larger event began, in a beautiful room with wraparound views of Columbus Circle and Central Park. There were many hundreds in attendance; Caroline had no idea whether people would even be interested in the event, but it sold out and had a healthy waiting list as well. The incomparably beautiful (but rather short) Julia Ormond made the presentations of the two inaugural "Power of Film" awards, one to Ambassador Holbrooke, and one to Jane Rosenthal, the co-founder along with Robert DeNiro of the Tribeca Film Festival, which kick-started the redevelopment of downtown after 9/11. I had the opportunity to speak briefly with Ormond, Holbrooke, Glover, and Burns...
...and Elvis Costello, who did an unbelievable five-song acoustic set that absolutely brought down the house. Just incredible.
I also randomly ran into Mark, an old friend, Cornell classmate, and fraternity brother of mine who works for Latham & Watkins, a law firm that happened to be a corporate sponsor for the event. It was a pleasant surprise for both of us to be able to catch up there.
Shockingly few hors d'oeuvres, but the open bar rocked.
Anyway, there is now underway a charity auction to raise money for FilmAid International, with some really fantastic memoribilia and experiences up for bids, some at surprisingly low starting amounts. Best of luck if you bid.

"The River in Reverse"
"Bedlam"
"Invasion Hit Parade"
"She's Pulling Out the Pin"
"(What's So Funny) 'Bout Peace, Love and Understanding"
(unknown song about going to bed after throwing a party - the general consensus is that this was somebody else's song)
Any guesses on the identity of that last song?
............it couldn't be this , could it?!?!
Party Party
We're gonna drink enough tonight to drown the average army
By New Year's Day the next door neighbour will be goin' barmy
The milkman arrives at midday with his usual wisecrack
Who knows a girl with Wednesday legs so when's they gonna snap?
Chorus:
Why does everybody have to be so hale and hearty
Can't they see we're tryin' to have a party party party party
The last thing I remember I was talkin' to some fellas
Then she said she'd have a word for me with her good-looking mate
And handed me a pint-pot filled with Advocaat and Tizer
And I woke in the flowerbeds of fear and fertilizer
Chorus
So shift yourself and shake your bod
You got bullet proof insurance from fire, flood and Act of God
You got to learn from your mistakes
When you got a face like last week's Cornflakes
The doors and the window frames are by Pablo Picasso
The party decorations owned by Michelangelo
The fine music that you hear is by Stravinsky
With overall design by Leonardo daVinci
Chorus
So shift yourself and shake your bod
You got bullet proof insurance from fire, flood and Act of God
You got to learn from your mistakes
When you got a face like last week's Cornflakes
Two boys are upstairs in your bed
Three girls are downstairs crying
The Alka Seltzer in the glass is roaring like a lion
You think you've aged ten years tonight and still never been kissed
So you overdose on aftershave and try to slash your wrist
Chorus and fade

Letter from the trenches of the NYC elite
Eileen blogs in , er, verse -
( extract)
Gussied up:
Cocktail dress,
Heels and pearls
Set off by subway to mingle
With the Hollywood set.
First gala benefit for
FilmAid International
Whose mission is to bring film to
Refugee camps around the world.
Elvis Costello!
Many songs
Feet away from us
While Vic and I talk about other things
In a stage whisper
Elvis says, "You won't be seeing me
For awhile; I'll be busy playing Dad."
We clap
He's pretty good.

But please do not abuse the section to publicize any sales you might be having unless you feel that they are of prime interest to people on the forum. In other words, we would much rather see specific offers to Elvis fan forum users as opposed to links to outside auctions.
This morning you've got time for a hot, home-cooked breakfast! Delicious and piping hot in only 3 microwave minutes.
Just to clarify: You would prefer I not make a post about, say, an Elvis Costello-signed guitar that I'm selling unless I am only offering it for sale to Elvis Fan Forum users? A link to an auction on eBay for the same guitar would be considered abuse, notwithstanding the potential for people who frequent this board to be interested in it?BlueChair wrote:But please do not abuse the section to publicize any sales you might be having unless you feel that they are of prime interest to people on the forum. Not judging, just desiring clarification of "of prime interest to people on the forum" and "specific offers" - I genuinely do not wish to offend. Thanks.

If you've got a signed Elvis Costello guitar, the norm would be to offer it as a gift to male fan forum members only who live in Kent in England.Beeeej wrote:Just to clarify: You would prefer I not make a post about, say, an Elvis Costello-signed guitar that I'm selling unless I am only offering it for sale to Elvis Fan Forum users?
Only joking (ahem!).
Who’s this kid with his mumbo jumbo?

This has been up on YouTube since August 2007 and does not appear to have been posted here yet. No sign of other recordings from this event.
