Lou Dalgleish and her husband Michael Weston King are about to launch a different joint musical venture:

My Darling Clementine - a Country album featuring their combined vocal talents. It is Nashville style country that swings along nicely. Read more here:

I hope to catch the "launch" event in London on Monday 31 October. Anyone else fancy it?

Decent quality video recording of the launch event now available on YouTube:

By A Thread: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g8UaYm0qtEk

Nothing Left To Say: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G3ijtMKI_Tk

The Other Half: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ysqqrECTG14 featuring the "Mighty" Martin Belmont on guitar stage left, behind Lou Dalgleish, just by the door to the vestry!

If you like these, buy the album which contains more of the same, and whose production was sponsored by our very own Martin Foyle (who is credited in the CD Booklet).

Lou Dalgleish and husband Michael Weston King recently recorded a country album under the name "My Darling Clementine". They have also recorded songs from that album for a session for "Bob Harris Country" on BBC Radio 2. The session will be broadcast next Thursday 12 April at 19.00 BST. More details here:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01fct28

Musicians who appeared on the recorded album included Martin Belmont and Geraint Watkins (who is in Nick Lowe's band on his current tour), but it remains to be seen who will appear on the BBC Session recording.

Listen to the session and judge for yourself whether "My Darling Clementine" are as good as the critics say.

Review of the recent live show of "My Darling Clementine" by Robin Denselow for The Guardian.

Sunday 13 May 2012
Union Chapel, London

For the theatrical opening, at least, the setting is perfect. The Tammy Wynette and George Jones wedding song The Ceremony is playing as Michael Weston King and Lou Dalgleish walk up the Union Chapel aisle. She's wearing white and clutching a bouquet, and he's dressed in a hat and cheap blue suit. ("It's polyester", he later explains. "We suffer for our art.") Once they reach the stage, the mood changes as he picks up a guitar and they launch into By a Thread, the first of their pained duets about broken relationships, cheating and hurt. Behind them are a five-piece band, with organ, pedal steel, and twanging guitar work from Martin Belmont, famed for his work with Carlene Carter and Nick Lowe. By now they sound as if they should be to be playing in an American honky-tonk bar, back in the 60s or 70s.

My Darling Clementine is a bravely unfashionable British band who set out to pay tribute to those great country duos of that era – Tammy and George, or Johnny Cash and June Carter. And they do so remarkably well. Like our great veteran purveyor of country misery, the bleakly humorous Hank Wangford, they mix gloom with excellent musicianship and some fine songs. It's clear that this is no spoof band when they can write powerful weepies like Departure Lounge or the stomping 100,000 Words.

All that's lacking is variety. They switch between slow gloomy ballads and medium-paced sad country rockers, but performing almost every song from their album How Do You Plead? is not quite enough. A few more country classics like A Good Year for the Roses – made famous by George Jones and Elvis Costello, and finely sung here by the duo with solo keyboard backing from Dalgleish – would have helped an original and entertaining set.

So Lou (and Michael) are playing with a one time "Attraction" - Martin Belmont, and singing Good Year For The Roses. Catch them if you can.

How did you end up playing country music? What path led you here?

MWK: Very simply, Almost Blue by Elvis Costello. Lou and I were, and still are, huge fans of his and that album, courtesy of his immaculate taste in song choice and songwriters, [and it] opened up a new world of music for me. From there it was Harlan Howard, Merle Haggard, George Jones, and Gram all the way. It took Lou a little longer as she was still entrenched in more jazz and pop, but living with me she had no choice but to listen to country.

LD: Although my family background was steeped in a love of jazz, The Beatles and pop music, I fell in love with Patsy Cline’s voice at an early age. It was like a guilty secret, listening to music that was considered very uncool and rather cheesy, but there was something so pure and beautiful about the way she sang. I had no idea then that I would go on to write and sing country music myself. I was busy writing and performing within the “serious female singer/songwriter” genre. Then, when I heard Almost Blue, I realized that there was a whole other world of country music out there that didn’t have to be twee and embarrassing. As it turns out, writing and performing as My Darling Clementine is proving to be my most artistically inspiring genre. And a lot of fun.

My Darling Clementine

Post by Man out of Time »

A new album by "My Darling Clementine" (Michael Weston King and Lou Dalgleish) is in the pipeline and you can read more (and pledge money towards recording costs) here:

http://www.pledgemusic.com/projects/myd ... roject7000

You will see that The Brodsky Quartet make a guest appearance. Lou has previously performed with them, so this is not a great surprise. No mention of Martin Belmont, and I guess he may be missing from this album due to touring with The Rumour.

Support it if you can.

Lou and her husband Michael Weston King have recorded four EC covers which you can listen to here:

https://soundcloud.com/michael-weston-king/alison Alison (LD)

https://soundcloud.com/michael-weston-king/almost-blue Almost Blue (MWK)

https://soundcloud.com/michael-weston-k ... s-and-soap Pills and Soap (LD)

https://soundcloud.com/michael-weston-king/shipbuilding Shipbuilding (LD)

I am so pleased to have decent quality recordings of Lou singing these EC songs. It is around twelve years since I first saw Lou perform a set of EC songs, at the Robin in Bilston (as reviewed in Issue #28 of Beyond Belief), and she still sounds great (IMHO). See what you think.

The My Darling Clementine Spring newsletter reports that Lou and Michael will be working with Steve Nieve on an album of Elvis' songs to be called "Country Darkness". They write:

"RECORDING IN PROGRESS

We are delighted to announce work on the new album has started. It is to be called Country Darkness and will be our intrepretation for duet, of the country and country soul songs of Elvis Costello. As many of you know EC has been a big influence musically on both of us.

Pre-production began last month in France with one of EC’s longest standing collaborators, the great Steve Nieve on piano and as musical director. Recording is due to start in June.

We will be playing some of the selected Costello songs live very soon, starting at the shows in May."

Glad that Lou and Michael will finally get round to recording their versions of some Elvis country favourites. Also good that Steve is keeping busy, whilst not touring with The Imposters.

This is great news!

I really hope that "Elsie" tours to promote this in the UK (and doesn't just hook up with Blondie in the US like her alter ego)!

Thanks for the update MooT

I think the big fear for all keyboard players is losing the flexibility of the fingers or missing notes on a regular basis. My father passed away in February having spent over 75 years playing the church organ at a really decent standard but gave up unannounced lat Palm Sunday. Looking back he complained about losing sensation in his right little finger and struggling to move his 90 year old hips to play the pedals and it certainly left him bereft and sad. He rarely played his Steinway ( now residing in my house like a nun in a brothel - rarely used and seldom stroked!) and I worried that this loss of action in his true love and calling might have contributed to his demise - see also Keith Emerson.
So long as Steve can maintain the unbelievable;e heights that he's continued to inhabit recently as seen at the solo shows in London and Liverpool in 2015 and last year's Imposters shows, I don't care how ragged he looks - especially as he's looking damn fine now. Best wishes to all these fine, heart-warming musicians!

Thanks, Neil, it was my brother who's probably just got the edge. I always threatened Dad that I'd play - he was really worried I would because I'm so crap compared to them !

This something to look forward to - I've seen My Darling Clementine live 3 times - very enjoyable.

Depends if it's just Elvis-written songs or also includes song he's popularised, like Good Year For The Roses. If just the former they could do: Radio Sweetheart, Different Finger, People's Limousine, American Without Tears, The Crooked LIne, I Lost You, That's Not The Part Of Him You're Leaving.

Oh, and Country Darkness, one would guess!
Can't you see I'm trying to change this water to wine

This sounds like it’ll be very interesting!
I only saw about it on Sunday evening, bought a ticket spur of the moment in case it sold out, then found out the next day it would involve a 9 hour plus round trip! So I’m not going unfortunately. :(
Be nice to think he could repeat this “down south” at some point.
Hope someone on here goes and gives us a report.
If anyone does go...........enjoy! 8)
