Elvis-NYC Sept 24

Post by johnfoyle »

A quick note on tonights show. Very similar setlist with six additions.
King
of America and Little Triggers were in the #2 and #3 slots. Late in the
show
(probably first encore) we got Deep Dark Truthful Mirror and All This
Useless Beauty. Show ended with I Still Have That Other Girl, and then
The
Birds Will Be Singing, and then CCIU #4 (all three sans microphone).
The
deleted tracks were: Rocking Horse Road, All The Rage, Radio Silence,
and
Tart. I think all the North songs were the same. 45 was moved from the
front
to near the end. Either Side of the Same Town and I Still Miss Someone
where
amazing. Someone will undoubtedly post a full sequenced set list some
time
soon.

I preferred Monday, but some esteemed Costello-philes liked tonight
better.
Solid show in any case. Crowd was in love with Elvis, and he was eating
it
up - the final three songs looked like they were intended to be one,
but
Elvis just couldn't seem to help belting out one more without
amplification
(really, not the fake EC million encore bit, but genuine last minute
decision to stay). Anyway, two great nights in NYC give North a nice
live
send-off. Hope his voice is OK for tomorrow's TV show.

- Craig

PS: NO sign of the baseball cards tonight.

I felt like he was seducing the audience with "I Still Have That Other Girl."

I have to say that we should finish it now
Before we weaken 'cause we already know this is wrong

It was another adoring audience--he got standing ovations for almost every song!--and he was obviously basking in the glow of our idolatry, but, you know, he's got a lady waiting for him backstage. He wants to stay with us, he really does, but he just can't shake his desire for her, so it wouldn't be quite right. And of course, we ate it up. "You'll call, right?"

Sounds like a great show!

I can't even count how many times I've seen Brilliant Mistake refered to as "King of America" by critics, though. All true Elvis fans know that KOA is an album, not a song title, dammit!!!

TYM and ATUB were both represented last night, unlike Monday, and let me tell you, "Little Triggers" and "All This Useless Beauty" were masterfully sung and joys to hear; but that came at the expense of BY and WIWC: "All the Rage," "Rocking Horse Road," "Tart" and "Radio Silence" didn't make the cut.

"I Still Have That Other Girl" and "The Birds Will Still Be Singing" were both welcome additions, and "Either Side of the Same Town" gets better and better. EC's version just has to be on something eventually.

After two hearings, I think I can say pretty definitively that the North songs really benefit from live presentation. His expressions and gestures, and in some cases spoken introductions, add a lot.
