I sucked in my final breath
Stared into the eyes of death
Laughed right in the face of chance
And said hey son do you want to dance
But I was trembling deep inside
My faithful friend right at my side
As that firefight began
He had the courage of twenty men
The days are never really done
The war's not over until it's won
If you want to count on anyone
Then thank the Lord you're free
Who was that lucky dog
Was it him or me
Who was that lucky dog
Was it him or me
When the enemy is closing in
And you've either got to run or win
You think that this might be the end
You're really going to need a friend
But I don't care for fancy words
In noble(?) speeches that I have heard
Or the lies and tricks that they employ
What was that you were saying boy
The days are never really done
The war's not over until it's won
If you need to count on anyone
Then thank the Lord you're free
Who was that lucky dog
Was it him or me

I've only got to hear this now ( I relayed it from someone who didn't want to be credited) ;
'In noble(?) speeches that I have heard'
sounds more like
'Ignoble speeches...'

Re: MP3 of "Lucky Dog"
Nice song, but some of the lines strike my ears as a bit odd, a bit uncostelloesque:
"Stared into the eyes of death"
"Then thank the Lord you're free"
"When the enemy is closing in
And you've either got to run or win
You think that this might be the end
You're really going to need a friend"
Weird.

Costelloesque seems a little unwieldy. How about Elvish?wordnat wrote:Nice song, but some of the lines strike my ears as a bit odd, a bit uncostelloesque:

so like elvis
Re: MP3 of "Lucky Dog"
At the DC show, Elvis gave a long intro to this, said he found the song on the B side of a 45 he bought in Fort Lauderdale. Said it was written and sung by a Sergeant Larry Singer (I think he said Singer) and that Lucky, the dog, was famous and appeared on the cover of Life magazine (presumably in the 70s or late 60s, as he said this took place in Southeast Asia.). He said Singer's career didn't take off like Barry Sadler's ("Ballad of the Green Berets"). I couldn't find anything about Lucky or Sergeant Larry on the web, can anyone else? Is Elvis spinning a tale here or is it just a really obscure find he made?

Re: MP3 of "Lucky Dog"
He says in the Purchase intro that "it's a true story, you probably remember it," and yet Google can't provide any information about Sgt. Larry Singer, Lucky, or Fort Lauderdale's Four Tet record label.
I don't see how it can possibly be true.
