Cool, the DUDE will be there. Killer Bridge School lineup this year. Great benefit, good people. I will gladly donate the ticket price, plus more. To all the EC fans outside of the Bay Area, sorry. We are spoiled.

Oh get off it, they're both great bands.bronxapostle wrote:pretty cool Dave...except for those grizzly bear AND modest mouse guys....they both STINK! anybody who thinks they are worth a dime, is just plain FULL OF CRAP! More than that, they're bound to attract the younger crowd-- hopefully this year's Bridge School is a lot more successful than last year's.
This is for the benefit of the kids, not of some crotchety gentleman in an Elvis Costello message board.

Even Elvis Costello was impressed by Idol’s set. “How great is Billy Idol?” he asked the crowd. “I haven’t seen him in thirty-three years, when he was on Top of the Pops.” Costello brought out Emmylou Harris for his entire set, beginning with a lovely duet on Neil Young’s “Tell Me Why.” They also song the Everly Brothers song “Love Hurts,” which Harris performed with Gram Parsons shortly before his death. Pegi Young and Lucinda Williams joined Costello for a powerful “Scarlet Tide.” “I found a razor blade since I first played here twenty years ago,” Costello said, in one of the night’s lighter moments. “Back then I looked like the Wolfman. I would have kept it had I known the Werewolf look was going to come back.”

Oh I feel a brand new heartache coming on
Why can't I trust in you?
Why do you try to make me blue the way you do?
Tonight we had a date and you're three hours late

Neil Young and friends rock out for Bridge School
By Marco R. della Cava, USA TODAY
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — Wow, man. There's tie-dyed Woodstock emcee Wavy Gravy getting wanded by security. And backstage, check out psychedelic album cover maestro Stanley Mouse drawing up a storm. On stage? How about Buffalo Springfield, ripping through nearly a dozen of their chart-topping hits. Who says you can't go back in time?
Saturday's '60s throwback came courtesy of Neil and Pegi Young's annual — 24 years and counting — benefit concert to support The Bridge School, which helps children with severe physical handicaps. Although the lineup for the all-acoustic, eight-hour affair was typically eclectic, the undeniable focus was on Young's first ever reunion with the remaining members of his first band, formed with Stephen Stills and Richie Furay in the musical caldron of 1966 and disbanded two years later. Band members Bruce Palmer died in 2004 and Dewey Martin passed away in 2009.
The surviving trio did their late friends proud. Opening with a slightly slowed version of the Furay-led On The Way Home, Stills and Young dutifully fell into supporting roles as harmony singers. The rendition was tight; close your eyes and you could almost be tuning into an AM station from yesteryear.
Furay, dressed in a black cowboy shift with white buffalo motifs, stayed in the spotlight with A Child's Claim to Fame, Do I Have To Come Right Out And Say It and Kind Woman. But the men flanking him would soon show their stuff, making it instantly clear why Buffalo Springfield was fated to be a passing phenomenon. Stills' unbridled musicianship would soon demand David Crosby and Graham Nash for an outlet, while Young's unique songwriting and sound needed to take flight alone.
Young, wearing a brown suede jacket with long fringe, turned to the children in wheelchairs camped out on stage throughout the show and said, "This one's for all you kids," before launching into the poignant I Am A Child. Stills, noticeably formal in a sports coat and tie, matched Young's small masterpiece with his Springfield anthem, For What It's Worth. He then added Bluebird to the mix for good measure, to the hoots of many of the 22,000 packing the Shoreline Amphitheater despite incessant rain.
"We're Buffalo Springfield, thank you very much," Young said, seeming to relish the retro-pronouncement. Then the trio ripped into Young's roaring Mr. Soul, which would foreshadow his later work. The evening closed with an all-star jam of Young's Keep On Rocking In The Free World, which featured most of the evening's guests, including Pearl Jam, Elvis Costello, Emmy Lou Harris, Lucinda Williams and Jackson Browne.
Among the pre-Springfield reunion highlights was Kris Kristofferson singing a faint but heartfelt Me and Bobby Magee, after which he asked the crowd to send prayers to his ailing outlaw friend Merle Haggard, whose recent health issues prevented him from appearing on the Bridge School bill as planned. "Merle's the closest thing to Hank Williams as we got on this planet," he said.
In the shocking category was Billy Idol, who followed Kristofferson's mournful set with as raucous a 30-minute set of proto-punk that one could summon from acoustic instruments (and a set of drums). After bopping through his radio hit Dancing With Myself, Idol joked, "This is the crystal meth set," then ripped through a number of staples before wrapping up with Rebel Yell.
As for Bridge School staples — and Young pals — Pearl Jam captured the crowd with a compact set of recognizable hits such as Better Man and Nothingman. But the real treat was seeing Young join his favorite Seattle rockers for Walk With Me, the lead song on Young's new album Le Noise. While Young stomped through the song's monster chords, Eddie Vedder took over lead vocal duties while his "Uncle Neil," as the Pearl Jam frontman referred to Young, looked on with an approving smile. If one day Young decides he's too old to rock in the name of Bridge School, take one guess as to who may wind up leading the benefit charge.

The next act was Elvis Costello, accompanied by Emmylou Harris. They did a few Gram Parsons songs, including Sleepless Nights, which Emmylou dedicated to Ben Keith. Ben and L.A. Johnson were two close associates of Neil Young who died in recent months. The night had a few remembrances for both, L.A. Johnson was a key figure in the Bridge School, as well as being a long-time friend of Neil’s. They met at Woodstock.

Sunday afternoon's unquestionable highlight was T-Bone Burnett's Speaking Clock Revue. Pairing exceptionally proficient musicians with equally expressive singers is the Academy and Grammy Award-winning musician's specialty. Here he assembled a large band for Elvis Costello, Neko Case, actor Jeff Bridges, bluegrass pioneer Ralph Stanley, and Elton John with Leon Russell.
Costello remains a consummate songwriter and entertainer: Saturday night he accommodated Emmylou Harris, who wasn't on the bill but contributed sweet harmony vocals throughout his set to songs like the standard "Love Hurts." Sunday afternoon a well-dressed Costello premiered songs from his excellent forthcoming album National Ransom; his only oldie was set opener "Brilliant Mistake."

Ta for 'Tell me why' link - nice.
'Sometimes via the senses, mostly in the mind (or pocket)'.
