Is 'Just About Glad' as good as i think it is,
or i´m just amazed to hear it for the first few times?
What a charming and desolated gem of a song...
'And on the few times I rang to propose/There was a man there or so I suppose','For all of the courage that we never had/I'm just about'...
The song alone makes 'Brutal Youth' a most own for a Costello apprentice... one of the man´s finest hour IMHO

Oh boy. Get ready for it. OK then? Here we go...
As excited as I was about Brutal Youth when it came out, I was less than impressed afterwards. A few good songs, but boomy production by Mitchell Froom. And I thought "Just About Glad" was a cliche Elvis song, one that someone else would have written as a parody.
Mind you, I can't find anyone else who agrees with me, which is fine. And I was happy to find versions of certain songs on the Rhino bonus disc that I preferred to the album cuts I already liked (namely You Tripped and Fave Hour). But the album only gets three out of five from me.
I await the tomatoes.

Brutal Youth, in my opinion, is Elvis's best record too. His vocals are BEYOND perfect, and lyrically its only rival is Spike (but Spike sounds too much like robotic-crap to me).
I never cared for "Just About Glad" until recently. The repitition in it turned me off. That's sort of funny, considering "20% Amnesia" was my favorite song for two weeks (three weeks after "Sulky Girl" was my favorite song).
Bob and Charlotte, I remember an altercation between you and I about Brutal Youth. I hope you're listening to it because of that.

I have to confess, I felt alot like Wardo at first about BY, but I didn't give it a chance. It definately grew on me.
And WOW, I just about flipped when I heard Just About Glad live! I really fell in love with the record after that.
(13 Steps is also a big fav of mine. EC's guitar solo is just so cool.)

I'm not angry anymore....
