Hay-on-Wye: its festival will now feature film as well as books
The Guardian Hay Festival this summer is to offer film events as well as the usual banquets of literature, comedy, cabaret, politics, art, music and children's entertainment.
Jane Fonda, Goldie Hawn and the director Spike Lee were announced yesterday as being on the list for the cinema events.
They will lead a programme of masterclasses, documentaries, premieres and preview screenings.
The festival, which now draws 90,000 visitors, is celebrating the 19th year of its success in Hay, a town which has only 1,300 inhabitants but 39 bookshops.
The 10-day programme has further extended its colonisation of the grounds of Hay castle - which already boasts the biggest marquee in Wales - by booking
Elvis Costello and Morrissey and introducing a state-of-the-art cinema, thanks to sponsorship by Film Four and Arts and Business.
