Wow ! What a day I had yesterday !
Went to see The Stray Cats at Hammersmith (Odeon) Apollo on their 40th Anniversary Tour.............and they were bloody fantastic. I've been following them ever since they supported Elvis in 1980, even before they had a record deal !
I almost feel like I discovered them !
Whilst at the gig I was lamenting the loss of The Palais, just around the corner, coz it was such a great gig venue back in the day.
Then I get back after midnight, catch up on the forum and see this cryptic clue and the hope of a UK tour for the great man......................please let it be true !
The perfect end to a brilliant day !

Elvis also tweeted a follow up picture but sadly my computer illiteracy means I can post it. Could someone do the honours? It's the picture of the inside of a venue although I must admit, it didn't look like Hammersmith Palais to me.
I guess this is the precursor for an announcement - Elvis and the Impostors: coming to a dance hall near you!

That’s def not The Palais, which was actually demolished in 2012.krm wrote:IMG_20190627_164350.jpg

EC's only previous appearance in Sunderland was in 1980.
They played several other cities for the only time on that tour, but Sunderland is the one EC always mentions first in interviews:
"We did a tour in 1980, we played Sunderland rather than Newcastle, all the next places down the road, just to make a change, and it was hit and miss."
http://www.elviscostello.info/wiki/inde ... e_29,_1996
"I did this tour when I had this revolutionary idea of playing the places people never went to. So we didn’t play Newcastle, we played Sunderland, and we did all these end-of-pier shows in seaside towns."
http://www.elviscostello.info/wiki/inde ... tober_1996
"I went on a tour after that where we played Sunderland rather than Newcastle, Southport rather than Liverpool and Folkestone rather than Brighton — you know what I'm saying? I was trying to fuck it up. I knew I couldn't work like that for long."

I knew it - the UK tour is going to mimic the Get Happy! Tour of 1980 and do all the out of the way places, Yeovil, Fishguard, Hastings , Bere Alston ( my Home village ) and even more obscurely Goodison and Orpington

Ah, it all makes sense although I can't see it being as extensive as that tour was.
I saw the tour at the Wirrina in Peterborough but also saw Elvis at the Rainbow and the NEC in Brum in 1980.
About time he played in Northampton. It's out the way, just down the road from usual venues and more importantly about 2 miles to the venue to my door.
Having said that, 1980 was the Get Happy tour. Trust was 1981

So, do all these #justtrust2020 tweets mean a Trust based tour next year?
Here's hoping!

More images and tweets are being posted by Elvis - some are seaside related.

Why the Tweets about September? September 2020? Or this coming September?

The announcement will come in September.
EC also dismisses the idea that they will only play songs from the album “Trust”.

Elvis is very busy on twitter about this.
It'll be great to visit some venues in [speculatively] different seaside venues.

Re: "Plotting our return, early in the Leap Year"
A trip around the seaside resorts of Britain in February doesn’t sound that enchanting to me but as I live in the south west with coast all around, I’ll take any that come my way. Just a pity that the Cornwall Coliseum was demolished a few years ago .
Re: "Plotting our return, early in the Leap Year"
That would be fantastic. The first time I saw EC was at the legendary Dixieland on Colwyn Bay Pier, on that exact tour, March 1980.sulky lad wrote:I knew it - the UK tour is going to mimic the Get Happy! Sadly the pier has been pulled down - only in the last couple of years, ironically, although Dixieland ceased to be a concert venue decades ago.
Still, if EC were to play anywhere in that area (where I grew up), I would move heaven and earth to be there. He did do Llandudno with the Detour tour in 2015, and I reckon Venue Cymru could accommodate a full-band gig.
Make it so, please...

Nothing obscure about Goodison, but I don't think EC has ever actually played the home of English footballsulky lad wrote:Get Happy! Tour of 1980... and even more obscurely Goodison .
In 1980 I saw the epic gig at Southport's Floral Hall, a repeat would be most welcome.

Re: "Plotting our return, early in the Leap Year"
I think the 1980 tour of the Uk is probably the least well documented of all his UK tours and it's fantastic that we've got at least four people who have witnessed that tour, Goon Squad at Canvey Island , CTB at Southport, Hawksmoor at Colwyn Bay and Offshoreram at Peterborough - in 6 months time you'll all have to write down you memories for the 40 year celebration to go with the recordings from then
Re: "Plotting our return, early in the Leap Year"
Clive Langer and the Boxes supporting. Which, given that that was my first 'proper' gig, makes them the first band I really saw live. I went out and bought their LP, 'Splash' the next day. It's not great, to be honest, but it still holds an affectionate place in my heart.sulky lad wrote:Hawksmoor at Colwyn Bay...
