Zagat are the people who do the super-popular (and pretty useful) series of restaurant guides. They've tried to apply the same thing to movies and now music, but there's a difference between, "gee, I need to find a restaruant in ______ for Saturday night that has vegetarian food on the menu" and "Gee, I need to need to know what the fifty greatest comedies of all time as voted for by random people is".

Unless they've changed it, their technique is polling, as filled out by both ordinary eaters and food critics. Actually, I don't know if critics are allowed to vote on the new entertainment guides. I do understand the lists are typically bland for movies.
