Recent CD Purchases

This is for all non-EC or peripheral-EC topics. We all know how much we love talking about 'The Man' but sometimes we have other interests.

I just followed WSS's lead and ordered a 5 CD set of all Beethoven's symphonies conducted by David Zinman, £12.69 all in. Brilliant deal.
Nice one. They are fantastic performances, and you can't beat that deal.

If you think that's a deal, I just picked up a new, sealed complete recording of Wagner's Ring cycle for $25 from eBay. The set was only issued in Canada through Deutsche Grammophon, but what an astounding bargain! Levine conducting the Met orchestra - a production I know well from the television broadcasts. Excellent modern sound, a steady cast. I don't think the libretto is included, but I have the Haitink set, so I can just use that one. Comes out to less than $2 per CD.

Where do you fit it all? Is this why the borracho Peruvian was contracted, to build an extra extension for it?!?

What a deal. They're giving it away. Wouldn't be my cup of tea, but am still jealous!

It's fairly compact, actually. Just the box, with the individual CDs in paper sleeves and a booklet. The nice thing about a lot of these reissue sets is that they've ditched the jewel cases.

Not immediately likeable but it has grown on me, the band versions are very soulful (Mrs Solack thinks it sounds very Van). Now playing the solo versions, some of which sound quite a bit different. Not sure which I prefer, probably a mixture of the two.

Image

Confession: I have never perviously owned a Nick Lowe album. I'm sure I had 'Breaking Glass' as a single but times were hard in '78 and I never progressed onto the 33. Despite the EC connections over the years there has always been something I wanted more. Quite pleased with most of this, lots of familiar tunes, but it ain't This Years Model!

Image

After enjoying Chris Wood's Trespasser album (released this year) I backtracked to this 2005 release. Just as brilliant, great singing, playing and songs with a story.

Image

More English folk backtracking. Not as good as Rough Music, but some really nice songs nevertheless. I will be continuing to collect Eliza's back catalogue.

Image

The moment seemed right to get this. Some good stuff, some dodgy-ness.

Picked up the following three for £10 total!

Image

Been meaning to pick up something by the SAHB for quite a while. Their performances on The Old Grey Whistle Test are indeed sensational. Here they are doing Delilah!

Image

A '70's GP album that I never had. Don't know why 'cos it's fantastic.

Image

Another artiste that I have never had anything by before. Only played a couple of times so far - great voice.

I should hope not! Mood Swung is the only person round here who enjoys Nick Low perviously.

Credit to Nick Lowe. He must've felt thoroughly chuffed about his work to call himself The Jesus of Cool. Just like Bruce Springsteen couldn't have gotten away with calling his album Magic if it weren't good enough for it. I like that sort of self-confidence.

exactly.

Doesn't get the r-e-s-p-e-c-t because it's not a "serious" record.

I picked up the two disc set of The Juliet Letters in HMV yesterday for £5.

I also bought this: http://www.play.com/Music/CD/4-/3513146 ... oduct.html

For Mrs VG obviously. There is a great booklet and a massive double sided picture of Donny Osmond and David Cassidy.

I've also added £120 worth of CDs to my basket at play.com which includes numerous expanded rereleases of Squeeze CDs. I can't bear to click the BUY button and may have to buy them in stages. But I want them all NOW!!!

Haven't checked out Nocturama and The Lyre Of Orpheus properly yet but am really enjoying Dig!!! Lazarus Dig!!!, and Jarvis. Dig is a howler and Jarvis, while very good, makes me yearn a bit for the highly strung tension and poignancy of a lot of Pulp material.

First George Michael, and now this. Actually, I would love to hear all three of those CDs. Reliving my childhood early Sunday evenings, listening to the top 40 on the radio. CD 3 contains Hello, who, for some reason, I've been thinking about recently, specifically Back in the New York Groove, which turns out to have been a Kiss song. Annoyingly, YouTube has no original TOTP footage, only this from German TV:

Likewise, Tell Him, the one on your beloved Jackie CD, is also unavailable from TOTP, or even from the 70s, but there is, disturbingly, this from 1997, with original frontman Bob Bradbury:

Good choices, especially the one that starts with a masterpiece with lyrics that go like this:

How dare the Premier ignore my invitations?
He'll have to go
So, too, the bunch he luncheons with
It's second on my list of things to do

At the top is stopping by
Your place of work and acting like
I haven't dreamed of you and I
And marriage in an orange grove
You are the only thing in any room you're ever in
I'm stubborn, selfish and too old.

I sat you down and told you how
the truest love that's ever found
Is for oneself
You pulled apart my theory
With a weary and disinterested sigh

So yes I guess I'm asking you
To back a horse that's good for glue
And nothing else
But find a man that's truer than,
Find a man that needs you more than I

Sit with me a while
And let me listen to you talk about
your dreams and your obsessions
I'll be quiet and confessional
The violets explode inside me
when I meet your eyes
Then I'm spinning and I'm diving
Like a cloud of starlings

Darling is this love?

They read well on the page, and you get a flavour of the wit and imagination, but you have to hear it in its musical setting to appreciate it fully. It's brilliant and beautiful, but it's also bonkers. I can't get it out of my head, more than anything else on the track after a few weeks of listening.

By the way, did you order Seldom Seen Kid on CD or vinyl?

The first song is very quiet, so when you first put it on, turn the volume right up to get the full sense of the detail, OK?

Lucky! I ordered the deluxe CD, which does sound splendid as it's the first title in the 'Turn Me Up' campaign, designed to combat the loud mastering that's screwing up so many modern recordings. However, the vinyl is a double, gatefold jobbie, pressed at 45rpm. It must sound fantastic, but I can't really justify it having already gone for the deluxe edition. I'll be interested to know how it sounds.
