Legendary rocker Elvis Costello headed back to Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor
Back in June of this year, the English singer-songwriter Elvis Costello had to cut short his show at the famed Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor on the University of Michigan campus. He'd apparently picked up a terrible cold at the time and couldn't do the show justice then.
Costello promised Ann Arborites that he would be back - healthy and ready to entertain the fans at a later point.
On Monday, the gracefully-aging rock 'n' roll (who just turned 60 this year) star will keep that promise. He'll be returning to the Michigan Theater on E. Liberty Street in the heart of downtown Ann Arbor to perform a whole additional show that was added onto the end of his current U.S. tour.
Originally-slated to end on Saturday with a pair of shows at the Hollywood Bowl, Costello's American tour will make once final pit stop in the heart of the Mitten State to make sure his Detroit area fans get every bit of their money's worth.
Elvis Costello is a perfect Ann Arbor popular culture musician. He's part artist/part hipster, but all rock and roll, and he's kept his style and tastes consistently interesting while never sacrificing his music or his art. It's no secret as to why so many in the recording industry have turned to Elvis Costello over the years for guidance and inspiration.
While he's been an electric, or alternative/indie style rock musician for most of his expansive career, this current tour sees Elvis Costello performing solo with only his acoustic guitar to accompany him (hence the importance of a good singing voice not hampered by a cold).
Costello will be revisiting a number of hits from his extremely-diverse back catalog (he's been writing and creating music since the '70s), but he'll also be performing new compositions from his recent collaboration with The Roots, which came out in the fall of 2013, titled Wise Up Ghost.
Costello's last studio releases as a solo artist were 2010's National Ransom and 2009's Secret, Profane & Sugarcane. Throughout the '90s and into the '00s, Costello recorded and performed a number of collaboration albums with famous and lesser-known musicians that drew wide critical acclaim, including projects with Burt Bacharach (Painted From Memory, 1998), Allen Toussaint (The River in Reverse, 2006), and two albums with Richard Harvey (G.B.H. in 1991 and Jake's Progress in 1995).
If previous performances from the rest of this tour are any indication, nothing will be off-limits from Costello's massive catalog of songs for this show.
Original tickets for the canceled June 13 performance will be honored, same seats and all, for the show, but new tickets for the concert are available and will range from $49.50 to $99.50. They are available at the Michigan Theater Box Office.
