Dear All,

The premiere screenings of In Good Time, The Piano Jazz of Marian McPartland at Maine International Film Festival were a great success. In fact In Good Time was the second in the MIFF Audience Favorite Film award, only 4 votes behind the first place film.

http://www.kjonline.com/news/m iff-pulls-in-8000-viewers_2011 -07-24.html.

I called Marian last night to tell her about In Good Time being one of MIFF's Audience Favorite films and that the film received a standing ovation at the premiere. She said she's very excited to hear all this good news. Of course this made my day. I feel honored to know Marian and thankful that she let me make a film about her.

There'll be more chances to see In Good Time in the Fall. The film will be part of MIFF in Bar Harbor on September 16 & 17. The Portland premiere is October 13 at Abromson Center, USM. There are more screenings upcoming at UNE, Bowdoin College, and other sites in Maine. Plus In Good Time was selected to be part of On Screen/In Person sponsored by the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation, Baltimore. I'll be at as many as 7 sites in the Mid-Atlantic states in November.

To keep up with the latest news and see some photos you can join Films by Huey Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/filmsbyhuey

My web site has been redesigned and will be up and running in a couple of weeks. http://www.filmsbyhuey.com/ For right now, DVDs are only available at screenings. Information on buying DVDs online will be announced soon.

Thanks for your support and I hope to see you at a screening.
Peace, Huey

It was announced yesterday that Ms. McPartland will not be returning as host of "Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz". Her last new show was in September of last year. Initially producers have said the new host will be Jon Weber but he is not a permanent replacement at this time. I really hope they give serious consideration to approaching EC for the permanent gig. It would be such a natural fit.

I finally got around to getting this. Lovely job, really tells the tale of a life. Good as it is to hear the adulatory talk it was neat to hear Elvis Costello chuckling over the fact that Ms McP. can 'swear like a docker'. The weaving together of the accounts from past 'n present to tell a sequential story has the added affect of emphasising how timeless Marion's music is. Elvis features a few times . The '09 performance of 'Our Love Is Here To Stay' isn't shown straight through which is a pity as Elvis is really worked up by the end of it, turning from the camera to compose himself.

Beside the many legends featured one new one Julian Waterfall Pollack seems well worth checking out.

Have been listening to the Piano Jazz cd with the two of them today- you can tell there exists a rapport between the two as the conversations intersperse between the songs- his performances of "Gloomy Sunday" and "The Very Thought of You" are most revealing. Will have to look for this DVD.

Dear All,
A week ago I was at the Sedona International Film Festival showing In Good Time, The Piano Jazz of Marian McPartland. Sedona is a beautiful place to show films and, of course, to get outdoors and hike in the red rocks under the bright blue skies. Here’s an interview KJZZ-FM, Phoenix, did with me while at the Festival.
http://kjzz.org/content/1202/sedona-fil ... ocumentary

March is a busy month with several screenings scheduled, starting March 13 in NYC . I’ll have DVDs with me at each screening. If you can’t make it to a screening, you can order In Good Time online at http://www.filmsbyhuey.com/films/in-good-time/

Also in March, Marian turns 94. You can visit her Facebook page and wish her happy birthday.

Here’s what an audience member from Minneapolis recently wrote me:
"Many thanks for such a wonderful film. It was informative, inspirational, well-edited and visually appealing."

And this from a review by Andrea Canter on Jazz Police:
"There are many ways a good story can be told, and here Huey seems to have melded the historical narrative of good documentary with the art of jazz itself, each commentary and musical moment spinning into a new story, moving in a new direction, yet always coming back to the core message, picking up that solidifying thread so that we are never lost, and never bored."

I hope to see you at a screening. Thanks for your support.

Peace, Huey

Dear All,

Here’s some reviews of In Good Time. One is from Leonard Maltin’s Movie Crazy web site. Maltin is a well known film critic and author who helped with some film research during production of In Good Time. He has a personal connection to Marian which he mentions in the review.
http://blogs.indiewire.com/leonardmalti ... a-jazz-doc

Another review by Douglas McDaniel is based on an interview he did with me at the Sedona Film Festival.

In Good Time looks great on the big screen but if you can’t make these screenings, you can order a DVD here. Please spread the word.

As reported elsewhere - sad news -

http://www.npr.org/blogs/therecord/2013 ... tw&cc=twmp

The earlier parts of this thread will tell a lot a bout how close Elvis & Ms McPartland were. The part in the film where Elvis talks about her ' swearing like a docker ' is priceless , as is her expression when she is told he had said that about her.

VERY glad that he is on "holiday" and will most likely get to participate in any services for her. that day at Tanglewood made it VERY apparent that they were indeed quite good friends and definite musical comrades. i'm sure he is very saddened at the news of today.

Dear All,
To all fans of Marian McPartland I want to let you know about some important upcoming events.

A Memorial Concert in honor of Marian McPartland will take place on Thursday, March 20, 7:30PM, at the 92nd Street Y, NYC. This is going to be an exciting event. Many of jazz’s top performers are already lined up to perform. McPartland family members will be there as well. I am honored to take part in this event and to be able to screen clips from, In Good Time, The Piano Jazz of Marian McPartland as part of the concert.
The concert is free and open to the public. BUT you must get tickets online to reserve a seat. Here’s the link for tickets:
http://www.92y.org/Event/Remembering-Ma ... tland.aspx

There is another event in recognition of the life of Marian McPartland the following Saturday, March 22, at 5PM, at the Port Washington Public Library, Port Washington, NY. Focusing on Marian’s support of young talent, the evening will feature Jon Weber, pianist and new host of NPR's Piano Jazz with performances by young jazz performers. One young performer will receive a scholarship from the Long Island Music Hall of Fame. Again, I will be there to show clips from In Good Time. This also is a free event.

If you can’t make it to either event, DVDs of In Good Time are available on my web site
http://www.filmsbyhuey.com/films/in-good-time/

To learn more about upcoming screenings and to see photos you can visit my Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/filmsbyhuey

this hunch proved correct. NO EC! but a pleasant night honoring the woman's FINE legacy and some solid music. AND IT WAS A FREEBIE. and we did have a BIG surprise guest. Mr. TONY BENNETT sang "THE WAY YOU LOOK TONIGHT" quite nicely. coincidentally, the only time i saw TONY was three weeks after seeing Elvis join Marian in Tanglewood and Tony at MSG Theater in September 2006
