What are you listening to right now?

This is for all non-EC or peripheral-EC topics. We all know how much we love talking about 'The Man' but sometimes we have other interests.

Don't bother with the ScarJo record. It was sent to me on behalf of Being There and it's bland, bland, bland.

Most of the reviews I've come across have actually been quite negative. Metacritic currently has it scoring 58 out of 100 based on 33 reviews. I was surprised to read NME's glowing review this morning. Well-produced, maybe, but you could have put a chicken in Scarlett's place and wouldn't notice the difference.
This morning you've got time for a hot, home-cooked breakfast! Delicious and piping hot in only 3 microwave minutes.

It is pure crap. Her voice doesn't have any interesting qualities and the layered production by that asshole from TV on the Radio doesn't help. Waste your money if you like, but don't say you haven't been warned.

As I noted in another post, the ScarJo album is not good. A couple of interesting moments, but bland as a cracker.

Switching gears a bit, what little I've heard off the new Sam Phillips record, Don't Do Anything, is quite excellent. Haven't picked it up yet, but hope to soon!

I have From A Basement On A Hill, Figure 8 and a few bootlegs and really don't know that much about his life to post about. It's obvious though from his usually quite introspective songs that he was a true artist way into his craft, he was constantly pulling out of himself stuff that the like of I see few songwriters coming up with. That's why I believe he was so good at nailing Beatles covers.

Is that a portmanteau of 'electric' and 'eclectic'? No, I guess it's the latter. Haven't got it yet, but plan to.

Got this as a father's day gift. Dropped a hint or two about the stashes of £5 NY's down at Fopp. My vinyl copy doesn't get an airing these days, and it's great to hear it again. From the first note of 'Don't Cry No Tears' you know you're in for a treat. The Crazy Horse sound was never better, and the guitar tones of 'Cortez the Killer' are some of my favourites. Classic mid-70s brilliance.

Curious - where's that lovely big image of Zuma I posted above at the weekend? If I quote or edit my text it appears there in the usual way, but not if I post it. Maybe it does appear on other browsers. All very odd.

I meant to say eclectic.

And I don't think I've ever seen the word "portmanteau" before. I like it and I think I'll try to drop it into conversation

I'm now listening to Nashville Skyline - Bob Dylan.

It's...(rushes off to think of a portmanteau)

Beck's Sea Change. I love this album - easily my favorite of his. I dunno - maybe it's the signature Nigel Godrich gloom, but it really does it for me on a rainy day like today.

Lots of Radiohead. Ready for the live event. Twas good returning to Hail To The Thief after quite an interlude and much thinking that In Rainbows was a lot better, but Hail has some great stuff on it, especially the closing three. It's too long, though. 10-12 songs would have done it. In Rainbows, like Momofuku, goes for the shorter approach and it's so welcome. Less is more.

I've been discovering great new bands left, right and centre lately. Delta Spirit are incredibly fun - straightforward rock 'n' roll with a bit more piano in the focus (kind of reminds me of The Kinks for that reason). You can hear a few of their songs on MySpace:

The album comes out in September, though I already got sent a promo copy.

Beautiful, isn't it? I think 'Elyne Road' is one of the most wondrous things I've heard this year. As is this:

See this thread for more:

It really is lovely. Great playing it the first two times being blown away by the sheer gorgeousness of the voices, arrangements and stylings of it, and thinking 'this is one to play over and over'.

Also great is:

How come WSS hasn't told us he\s got this yet? Very good, develops well from her excellent debut, several excellent songs. She sure likes to show off her lovely long legs! Great title.
