What are you listening to right now?

This is for all non-EC or peripheral-EC topics. We all know how much we love talking about 'The Man' but sometimes we have other interests.

My favourite GP album of recent years. 8)

I was just listening to this again last night. Disney's America has to be the best song Parker has ever written!
Agreed! I also love Haunted Epsiodes - the song.

Just ordered Deepcut to Nowhere. How does that rank?

Deepcut ranks in my top 5 favorite GP albums. It's a full-band record with a wide variety of songs ranging from rockers to quieter ones. The rhythm section on Deepcut is top-notch: the Figgs' bassist Pete Donnelly paired with Rumour drummer Steve Goulding. The two really clicked - just one of those great pairings that you never know will work out until you hear them together. Some great songs: If It Ever Stops Raining, Syphilis and Religion, Socks and Sandals, Tough on Clothes. I'll look forward to your comments once you give it a listen.

I need to go listen to this now!

I was a little disappointed with Don't Tell Columbus. I loved some of the songs, but it was a little uneven for me. I'm not sure why I didn't get Deepcut at the time it was released. Maybe too much going on or something. Lookingt forward to it.

My top 5 GP in no particular order (except the first one) would be:

Struck by Lightning
Burning Questions
Squeezing Out Sparks
12 Haunted Episodes
Human Soul

Played it again this weekend after a little break. Breathtaking. Song after song is so perfect. Had it all running round my head all day. Where does this music come from? It sounds simultaneously like something from 1968 that has been regarded for 40 years as the best LP ever made and something fresh and contemporary. It seems to be reminiscent of Appalachian folk music, the Byrds and the Beach Boys, the music of westerns in general, and 15 other forms of American music. Can any of you explain it to me? Would an American ethnomusicologist be able to explain it all in detail? It's hard to pick a favourite. About 5 of the songs are gobsmackingly perfect and the other half are merely outstanding. I can't imagine anything else coming close this year.

"White Winter Hymnal" popped up on satellite radio when I was driving down the the Red Bulls game on Saturday. Just lovely.

Incidentally, the material on their Sun Giant EP is on a par with the LP. If any of you are interested in having me burn you a copy, just let me know. It was included as a second disc with the vinyl, and they threw in a digital download as well.

I've never really known what the first line of Jimmy Jazz from London Calling was all about. You've now explained it, WSS! Looks like one worth checking out.

Pretty different from anything he's ever done, thanks partly to production by Danger Mouse

Very good. But if you're not a Beck fan then I doubt this would change anything.

Time Without Consequence
Alexi Murdoch

Another sign of how out of touch I am with contemporary artists. I got this after All My Days was used is the season finale of Without A Trace. I thought a late 60's John Martyn track was being used until I found out it was this.

From 2006 , the album , recorded at Sage and Sound in Los Angeles , is an eerie recreation of the sound that Joe Boyd and John Wood used to get at Sound Techniques ,a converted cow shed in Old Church Street, Chelsea , London. It's such a close copy that it comes close to parody and leaves Alexi open to the criticism ( that he has been getting) of being derivative and lacking in originality. The lyrics are a bit repetitive and self regarding. The album does work though as a mood piece , only going a bit OTT towards the end with '12' , a noisy instrumental. Imposter Pete Thomas contributes percussion on some tracks, Toms on Breathe and Indian Rattle on Blue Mind.

It's a nice sounding CD, sorta Nick Drak-ish.

New double LP 45 RPM transfer of this beauty. Oh man, does it ever sound great! Paul Chambers' bass and Kenny Drew's piano used to be buried way down in the mix on the CD and now they just pop out at you. Stunning sound. Like you're in the room.

Lineup is Coltrane, Philly Joe Jones, Paul Chambers, Curtis Fuller, and Kenny Drew. I'm gonna have to check out more of these Blue Note reissues.

And you've been so busy lately
That you haven't found the time
To open up your mind
And stop the world from spinning
Slowly out of time

Actually that's probably wrong, but that's how it came back to me. Great chorus, lovely song. Never played the rest of the LP much, but there's some other good stuff on it too.

Some more great concerts have been posted on NPR from this weekend's Newport Folk Festival. Already listened to terrific sets by She & Him, Jakob Dylan and Gillian Welch. Apparently performances by Brandi Carlile, Calexico, Levon Helm, Cowboy Junkies, etc. are going up. Steve Earle and Jim James (of My Morning Jacket)

Where will I find the time? I'm still only half way through the totally superb Waits show (if any Waits fans missed the link from the Tom Waits thread, you need to check it out now!), though I have played the closing portion and especially Hang Down Your Head a few times. Website of the year!
