When Linus and I got together to discuss "Got It Covered", one of the songs that we really wanted to model some of our work on was a track called "Bandages" by Hot Hot Heat. I remember always hearing that song in High School and thinking how ridiculously catchy it was, yet wild and spastic sounding. Elvis Costello is the king of making music that can be described at times as "Organized Chaos", so on this track we really tried to channel something along the lines of musical spontaneous combustion. Our "Pump It Up" comes off as a wild party anthem, and I love wild parties... esp. if there is beer and snacks involved! KURT BAKER

That is really funny. Until very recently the Napster web site used the exactly same picture to misrepresent EC! They only recently changed it to a proper photo. Must have been some sort of music industry database glitch.

Roy Trakin’s notes in the liner booklet is a wonderful guide, describing this support slot to Elvis Costello & the Attractions in Belguim in detail, “It was something out of The Year of Living Dangerously meets Nosferatu. Suicide had evoked a similar reaction supporting The Clash, did it matter which buttons they pressed in the audience, whether the reaction was good or bad? They begin to perform, Ghost Rider-Rocket USA-Dance…finally we arrive at Frankie Teardrop and the crowd are becoming too much. Vega tries to relate their own life to Frankie’s, looking for sympathy- they just want to do their thing. “We’re all Frankies” he points out, attempting to get the mic back “C’mon???”- the audience holler abuse, you think Pop Idols get it in the ear? Suicide admit defeat and leave the stage; but in the long-term, they won and this, one of the greatest live albums, is the proof.

Before losing a battle with lung cancer in May of 2008, Brooklyn-via-Ohio MC Camu Tao spent nearly a decade as one of the most underrated rappers in the indie underground. The depth of his talents were barely scratched by his recorded output--a great record with tear-the-club-up duo S.A. Smash, a slept-on concept record with noir crew Nighthawks, and a handful of gripping 12"s. Since 2004, Definitive Jux label head El-P had been hearing something else in Camu's demos and home-recordings, a wealth of material that was slowly repainting the MC as a brassy, bluesy, beat-wise singer-songwriter--a one-man mix of Gnarls Barkley and Sleigh Bells. Tao's long-in-the-works album, King Of Hearts, is finally seeing release on August 17 thanks to Jux and the forward-thinking folks at Fat Possum. The record is a stunning mix of electropunk churn, lovesick croon, and hip-hop wordsmithery. Had it been released four years ago, it would have easily beaten everyone to the punch--Drake, B.O.B., and admitted fan Kid Cudi--and done it all wrapped in a perennially cool haze of fuzzy art-punk distortion. Tao's album opener "Be a Big Girl" uses an infectious interpolation of Elvis Costello's Armed Forces centerpiece "Big Boys" to lay his heart on the line over some tape-damaged beatwork and maniacally crunchy Albini guitars.

But Wener does not entirely shatter the romantic pop-star fantasy in Different For Girls. Playing Top of the Pops for the first time, being serenaded on a stadium stage by Michael Stipe (I don’t remember that - Ed), having one of her songs covered by Elvis Costello, arriving wasted at the Trainspotting premiere: all these thrilling landmarks are recorded with warm hindsight. Teenage dreams are still hard to beat, even if their appeal soon fades. However minor their achievements, Sleeper really did taste real pop stardom, then gracefully disbanded before the machine chewed them to pieces. They were simply not hungry, lucky or talented enough to outlast the Britpop crash.

It would be absurd to suggest that he bore the intense physical and mental stress of quadriplegia with smiling equanimity. Callahan could be very sharp with anyone he felt was patronising him. The last original drawing he sent me, not long before his death, showed him sitting in front of the television, his tears represented by two dotted lines falling to the floor.

"That's me," he wrote on the bottom, "listening to a song by Elvis Costello, on Letterman. It was so beautiful." Music was as great a passion for Callahan as art or humour. He was proud to be one of the very few men, in recent years, to have been sought out by Bob Dylan.

I've noticed several have mentioned something to the effect of "I can't put my finger on it" - that's the perfect way to describe any Creed fragrance. Irish Tweed is very complex and you will never smell anything like it elsewhere. It is really unique and trying to describe it in words, especially in writing, is very difficult. I can tell you that I receive a lot of compliments on it and because it 'wears with time', in other words it gently and nicely changes notes the longer you wear it and it works with your body chemistry it's not uncommon for me to see someone in the morning and receive a "wow, you smell good - what is that?" then later in the day see the same person "Did you change colognes? I think I like this one better than what you had on this morning."

Irish Tweed is VERY unique, complex, fresh, slightly earthy and I agree, the best way to describe it is you can't quite put your finger on what you are smelling.

Cast most likely to get me into trouble: "NCIS." I don't know what it is about Michael Weatherly and Pauley Perrette, but I always end up finding myself on the verge of breaking some rule or other when I'm around them.

With Michael, he loves to tell stories when he knows you're not recording him, and they're invariably filled with some tidbit or other where you'd feel guilty running them intact. As such, I can't tell you about what happened when he gave Robert Wagner's E-mail address to Roger Moore…but if you ever meet Michael, ask him about the time he and Jessica Alba met Elvis Costello and Peter O'Toole. It's a good'un.

Josh Hancock literally wears his life on his body. It's the palette for multiple tattoos that cover his chest and the length of both arms.

If you know anything of his lyrical work for the 86 List, Black Square, or his solo project with his band the Pressure, the iconic images inked on his arms come as no surprise: Chuck Berry, Elvis Costello, The Clash's "London Calling" album and its late front man Joe Strummer, as well as the logos of punk figureheads Operation Ivy and Bad Brains.

There is a new detective comedy drama on BBC1 called Vexed which was on last Sunday (22nd).

About 32 minutes in there is a minute or so snatch of Pump It Up.

Is it as bad as many of the reviews say? Or is one of those way different shows that the lazy reviewers aren't making an effort to understand?

I read Louise Wener's account of her career in Sleeper - It's Different For Girls. EC covered What Do I Do Now, and there is an account of him inviting Sleeper on a tour of the US as the support. Louise said she had heard that EC was moody but saw no evidence of it apart from one incident. On stage one night, one of the Attractions made a mistake. Elvis stopped playing and led the band offstage.

Louise was watching backstage and as she relates the incident, not a word was spoken but Elvis stared at the floor for several minutes before leading the band back on stage.

Sounds a bit unlikely to me but there you go.
