E.C./Brodsky song used in Czech ballet.

http://opusosm.com/2010/10/31/the-premi ... ost-wasnt/

October 31, 2010

(extract)

Artistic Director and Choreographer Zuska was planning an “Americana” premiere of legendary US choreography for Prague’s National Theatre.

Svěcení Jara, also translated as The Rite of Spring, premieres at The National Theatre Nov 11-12, with repeat performances on Nov 14, 18, and 27, and again Feb 1-2 and June 19. In addition to Mahler and Stravinsky, the music includes Chopin, plus Elvis Costello, folk ballads, and more.

Even before the curtain goes up, the program is bringing triple rewards. First, Czech audiences now can see Mr Zuska’s pieces previously presented only in Australia and China. Second, the program requires many dancers, so the whole company is involved.

EMPTY TITLE

Choreography: Petr Zuska

Music: Elvis Costello – The Juliet Letters, The Brodsky Quartet, Tango

Costumes: Roman Šolc

This Pas de deux without a title - an "Empty Title" is based on a combination of two musical and design contrasts. Two diametrically opposed images and moods put next to each other, in a kind of violent and incongruous styling, two dancers dressed up as a pair in a refined and superficial gilt veneer, only to turn in a moment into two human beings with a deep personal emotional testimony full of sadness and loneliness, and without hope.

Someone once told me that as part of the promotion for King of America in 1986, Elvis sat in the window of HMV in London, on a throne with the KOA crown on his head. Anyone know if this is true?

Other top winners of the evening ......Jim Lauderdale, who was presented with SESAC’s “Inspiration Award” for his work with artists in a wide range of genres and songs cut by many of country music’s biggest stars. Collaborators Elvis Costello and Ralph Stanley sent video congratulations to Lauderdale, and friend Buddy Miller paid tribute at the ceremony with a rendition of Lauderdale’s “The King of Broken Hearts.”

Lauderdale said the evening was “very exciting and very emotional. I’m very grateful to be here in such amazing company of talent.”

A Curtain Call For Austin City Limits' Famed Studio
by Leah Scarpelli

"The performer on the stage could practically reach out and touch the people, the fans who are standing on either side," says Executive Producer Terry Lickona, recalling a performance by Elvis Costello. "And as often happens, the artist may step off the stage and go right out into the crowd and continue playing music."

More Costello related really , but a obituary today of Reg King of 1960's Mod group The Action reminded me of the first release in 1980 on the Elvis affiliated Edsel label of a collection of their singles.

Even without the Costello collection I just had to have this sleeve-

According to his bio, "Lamar Sorrento is a painter and guitar player from Memphis who paints the many musicians whom he admires. ...Recent dabbles include painting the cover art for Huey Lewis & The News’ new album Soulsville." Elvis (Costello and the King) are other subjects. Check out Sorrento's rocker folk-art at a special one-night-only art reception at AnTHM Gallery in Black Mountain, Thursday, Nov. 18, 6-9 p.m. anthmgallery.com. Watching the DVD release of "The Kids are Allright" this past weekend with my wife when who appears in the opening scene as a print on Julianne Moore's t shirt while they are seated around the dinner table-our boy in full face in all his glory from the 1978 year- mind you just the face.

Setlist appears to be:

EC "This Guy's In Love With You", DK "Look Of Love" + duet on "Makin' Whoopee"(only non Bacharach song)

Reminds me a bit of a friend of a friend dying who had worked as engineer on the Floyd's 'Wish You Were Here', and also a lot with Roger Waters solo. Apparently he never got a credit for WYWH nor much money from it, so when he died of cancer, RW turned up at the funeral, played the title song solo on acoustic and wrote the widow a large cheque.

Can you imagine being at something like either of these?

In similar vein, someone had posted this in response to a DK article in the Ottawa Citizen a few weeks ago -

"Fast forward to her global acclaim. A few years ago she appeared on consecutive evenings at the National Arts Centre (NAC). My friend and his wife had tickets for the first evening in the company of a couple who were their good friends. As the date neared, it was clear that the friend of my friend, who was an ardent fan of Diana, would be unable to attend because he was dying of cancer. My friend spoke to Diana after the concert. On the evening of Diana's final evening at the NAC, good friends gathered at the house of the man dying of cancer to celebrate his wedding anniversary. At 11:00 p.m. the doorbell rang. Lo and behold, Diana Krall entered and sang and played a number of songs."

Broadway stars from ‘Rent’ bring Great White Way to wine country

November 25, 2010

Those actor/singers who helped bring “Rent” to life on both stage and screen are Adam Pascal and Anthony Rapp. The two terrific entertainers have teamed up of late, billed as “Stars of Rent.”

Pascal and Rapp came to wine country last weekend, the second stop on a tour that will find them in Asia over the the holidays. The generous two-hour-plus show at Napa Valley Opera House Saturday attracted a few hundred enthusiastic fans — fans who hung on every note, every nuance; fans who not only knew “Rent” but were willing to laugh at lame jokes.

Rapp treated us to early Elvis Costello, a treatise on disappointment called “Alison,” from his first recording.

In the opening scene of the currently on release movie "The Kids are All Right" (which has nothing to do with The Who), Julianne Moore's character wears an EC t-shirt. The design is the cover short from 2.5 years without the lettering. Here she is wearing it, on set....

No EC music in the film, but lots of earlyish Bowie.

The SHOW IN VEGAS

Posted by Brian Farrell

Las Vegas - here for a few days - took in a couple of shows.

"Jersey Boys" on Saturday night was special. It's rare to hear a voice like the lead, Frank Cloer, who sang the part of Frankie Valli. Pure, clear, ringing, connected and honest - his voice was one of those rare tenor voices. After the show, I made a point to meet with him and complement him on such a fine show and performance. He loved his work - I liked his energy!

Tonight, my wife and I attended the Beatles LOVE show. After the show we met with the Dan Niehaus, Head Coach for the show. He toured us backstage between the 7 pm and 9:30 pm shows. This show is stellar. Dan mentioned that the remaining Beatles have have supported the show in a big way. Yoko Ono attends every six months, Paul McCartney attends about every two years, Ringo attended the opening. Two days ago, Elvis Costello was in the audience. Dan shared the concept of the show and the early workings with Sir George Martin and his son, engineer Giles Martin. It was a dream for him as a coach to consult with these individuals.

This is a big concept show - the music rings through your head - the speakers are built into the seat headrests, the visuals appear in multi-dimension on screens that appear and disappear on the set. The entire show breathes into a real time experience - it captures your imagination. The stage floor opens and closes like ideas flash to one's mind. I was spellbound at times - I don't think I've ever used that work before - but I was spellbound!

Las Vegas. I have this image of middle America walking the strip with a plastic bag of souvenirs gawking at the hotel facades. I've been here before - I did see that. This time I saw behind the scenes - the pulse of Vegas and the live show. I didn't buy any souvenirs - the "live show" experience is what I took hom
