There She Goes - The Las
What about me? I'm a huge fan of that LP, played it loads on vinyl back in the day (and not at all in ages, it must be said). There are some great pieces on that record, especially the above and 'Goodbye Porkpie Hat', which did a brilliant job of adding words to the original Mingus piece.Mr. Average wrote:"God Must Be a Boogie Man" - Joni (for Bluechair, who seems to appreciate the brilliance of the Mingus/Mitchell/Pastorius era..

"and she was" - Talking Heads
Sorry Otis. What a great record. And Jaco's soloing on Dry Cleaner from Desmoines makes you want to weep for his untimely passing.
"I never been a rich man, but you know, I always had a few dollars in my pocket" Mingus was exceedingly rich in what he brought to us all. I used to listen to "Cumbia nd Jazz Fusion" as a kid and my friends would leave because it was too weird. Great stuff, always pushing the envelope

Sleeps With Angels - Neil Young
I love the spoken bits on that LP, and also the rendition of Happy Birthday with the extra 'How old are you?' 'Fifty-four, motherfucker' exchange in it, and then Sue correcting him '53! You're 53 Charlie.'
Know several Mingus records, but not Cumbia and Jazz Fusion. One to check out, clearly.

That's better! That soloing is great, but it's the opening notes on the above-mentioned that stick with me. His bass on Hejira as a whole is fabulous too - Black Crow stands out. I must get Shadows and Light to hear him live on it.Mr. Average wrote:Sorry Otis. What a great record. Well, THAT was a little more than embarassing!
I could make a bunch of excuses about getting old, not getting enough sleep last night, etc, but what the hell. . .
