We just started the winter quarter at RIT last week and I realized that I had not posted any of my in-class demos from the Fall quarter. I will show several of these over the next week or so. This is an oil portrait of my all time favorite musical artist. I refer to him as the real Elvis; Elvis Costello. I have been a fan since his very first album which was released way back when I was in college. This is a "wet" oil technique that was completed on a 12 x 16 canvas panel in a few hours.
It is done with large brushes only for a more painterly look ( nothing smaller than a #4 flat hog hair bristle).

I've only ever seen this crappy print of a photo of Elvis 'n The Confederates in London in Jan. 1988 -

It would seem to be from the same session as this better print -

Elvis Costello: Mellowing with age

I lke these lines -

Like many others, I fell hard for Elvis Costello in the late 70s, the time of his ostentatious indignation intersect with my own.

started to witness to those who want to hear only about how society sucked so much

and changing patterns of presentation as well as others change their underwear.

Elvis Costello – Battered Old Bird
This is such a visual song. To me it's a sort of patchwork quilt of different characters and aspects of human nature. The key change in the middle is so strange; it exemplifies the strength of the link between the words and music, both of which are the work of a master.

Friday, December 17, 2010

This month we talk to Kieran Lynch, a Pulse College graduate from the Audio Diploma who has gone to carve out a substantial career in both Music and Film.

(extract)

Q10: You coproduced Elvis Costello's Grammy award winning album (WIWC) what an achievement, how did it feel?

A: Yeah, it was strange really. Again, I was working as a tape op in Windmill Lane at the time and I was told Elvis was coming in to record an album. Then I discovered two of my friend, Ciarán Cahill and Leo Pearson were going to be engineering and producing the album. I guess because I knew these guys so well I ended up doing a bit more than the average tape op gig. The album was amazing, the band just played the songs down two or three times onto tape, they came in, had a listen and picked the take. It all happened very quickly with overdubs recorded shortly after the band were tracked. Elvis sang the majority of the vocals in the control room with a beta 58, again, three or four takes and it was done. We all worked so well as a team that Elvis decided to split the production credits equally. It did feel great when the album got the Grammy nominations.

And also nodded to Elvis Costello, “his new album is just as good as any of his albums. He’s the guy I model myself on, to grow old gracefully. To be writing songs like that when you’re fifty...”

Kirty MacColl - 10 years gone today.

This commentary includes a interesting comment -

http://blogs.bbcamerica.com/anglophenia ... ars-later/

1993's Titanic Days was dark and tremendously lush, and many consider it her best work. MacColl was ending her marriage to producer Steve Lillywhite around that time, and the album's often bitter lyrics reflect that. (See the jazzy, Elvis Costello-esque "Can't Stop Killing You," which even has a reference to a "little Hitler.")

Home From Home

Taking a $20 cab ride from Times Square to the Lower East Side, I arrived at the Liverpool Supporters' Bar (http://www.lfcny.org/11st.html ) on Wednesday afternoon to watch the Europa League home fixture against Utrecht. Friends had told me about the place & it did remind me of a few pubs I occasionally frequent (one work colleague bumped into Elvis Costello in the bar at 7.00 EST when Liverpool played Manchester United at a lunchtime kick-off some years back).

"@tweedpig: At Elvis Costello's secret Nintendo4Africa afternoon gig at Hospital Club. So wonderfully intimate. Diana Krall's mince pies are the best!"

Well I'll be damned. Hospital Club? I was just there on Thurs! Clearly picked the wrong night.
(I guess that means they're spending Christmas in the UK - because it sure doesn't look like anyone is flying out of here any time soon!)

So Elvis goes to New York for that gig last Thursday and then comes back to the U.K. - there must have been some big fee for that!

Nintendo4Africa? Diana Krall's mince pies? I think that's someone's idea of a joke.
