Out -- The Shining, by far my least favorite Kubrick film (or second least favortie I have a sneaking respect for the godawful-but-fascinating "Eyes Wide Shut"), the book was actually better. I'll never understand this film's continued popularity. Besides Kubrick's on the board already with "Dr. Strangelove", one of the very best films ever that was also perfect subject for Kubrick's inhuman gaze.

In -- We haven't had a musical yet, you bunch of #$#@$ snobs....

Brazil - Terry Gilliam
Dr. Strangelove - Stanley Kubrick
House Of Games - David Mamet
Vertigo - Alfred Hitchcock
Der Himmel Über Berlin - Wim Wenders
The 400 Blows - François Truffaut
The Third Man- Carol Reed
Simon of The Desert - Luis Bunuel
High Heels - Pedro Almodovar
The Bandwagon -- Vicente Minelli

Actually, I'm proud to be called a film officionado, as I do, in fact, think about films at the office.

WINGS OF DESIRE is worth--was worth, excuse me-- sticking up for, and I thank you.

I can see where people might find it precious or stylized, but fuck that, the photography is amazing and the dialogue will give you marvelous new gifts every time you hear/see it.

You can debate what it says about modern Germany if you like, with Peter Falk playing himself as a (Jewish?) former angel in the midst of filming scenes set during the third Reich; an old man dying while wandering the DMZ trying to remember the Berlin he knew before the war, etc.-- I happen to think it's great-- but the basic stuff about the human heart and consciousness is a gift.

In my humble opinion, as they say. Carry on with the tower, which is fun if silly, making art fight like football teams...

Just thought I'd chime in as another fan of "Wings of Desire." It's a poetic hymm to life that dances on the edge of overseriousness but then, blessedly, lets its hair down with the appearance of Faulk -- and a wonderful discussion of the joys of coffee (and cigarettes, but since I'm not a smoker, I'll ignore that part).

If it ends with one of Wenders' trademark meandering, impossible-to-follow talk-fest endings, well, it fits in with the theme of accepting life, with all its annoyances and evils, right?

I may as well chime in officially here, as long as I'm blathering on about other people's choices...

Out: Scum
In: Dogs

Amores Perros - Alejandro González Iñárritu
Brazil - Terry Gilliam
Dr. Strangelove - Kubrick
Butch Cassidy & Sundance Kid - George Roy Hill
Treasure of the Sierra Madre - John Huston
The 400 Blows - François Truffaut
The Third Man- Carol Reed
Simon of The Desert - Luis Bunuel
Singin' in the Rain - Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen
Rear Window -- Alfred Hitchcock

I can't recommend this film highly enough. The animal violence is tough going, but in the end it's not as bad as you fear, and besides, it's the very opposite of exploitative violence-- it's the center weight of the film. The fate and actions of the many dogs in the film define what's going on with the humans in brilliant ways.
