One of those 'immortal questions'

This is for all non-EC or peripheral-EC topics. We all know how much we love talking about 'The Man' but sometimes we have other interests.

One of those 'immortal questions'

Post by laughingcrow »

Right...heard someone today talking about the 6 famous people you'd have as dinner guests if you could (note it's famous, cos everyone always wants to meet lost relatives) invite them to a feast of gargantuan proportion...

Wonder who might be invited to your parties???

Mine are...

Elvis Costello (duh)...great musician, great musings
Arthur C Clarke...inspirational writer, visionist and scientist
Bill Oddie...birding legend, all-round good egg
Peter Sellers...a genius actor and comedian, hero of mine
Charles Dickens...such a hard life, a brilliant social commentator
John Collins...an intelligent cultured footballer and one of few Scots post-bygone era with talent

Off to beddybyes now...

I'd have to invite Randy Newman, Elvis Costello, Tom Waits, Joni Mitchell, Woody Allen, and Bill Murray.

I can't imagine what a conversation between those 6 people would sound like. Funny, political, musical.... ahhhhhhhhhh :D
This morning you've got time for a hot, home-cooked breakfast! Delicious and piping hot in only 3 microwave minutes.

I'd crash Blue Chair's party, but since I don't know much about Waits, I'd HAVE to sub in John Lennon. I mean, come on, right? John freaking Lennon.
Loving this board since before When I Was Cruel.

I'm going to try and balance myself a bit more gender wise (it'll be one of those old fashioned dinner parties with the place cards, I suppose). Also, I've leaving EC off the list. I believe he should recuse himself, as there may be conflict of interest.

Ingrid Bergman
Groucho Marx
Ella Fitzergald
Kurt Weil
Carol Burnett
Nelson Mandella

If one of them can't make it, I'm leaving a space open for Alyson Hannigan. Okay, this former "Buffy" star -- also Band Camp Girl -- may not yet be in the same league with the rest, but she's a comer and this is my dinner party, gosh darnnit!

In fact, I'm disinviting Nelson.

Also, her new husband Alexis Denisof is not invited!

Ok, the few I have scrounged up are...

EC---Just cause I'd like to see what he'd say to the rest of the crowd and musical prowress.
Eddie Izzard--for entertainment and couture.
Mark Twain/Samuel Clemens---For biting wit to outdo all others.
Shakespeare--The original King of words.
Emma Goldman---Political activist extrordinaire
Dorothy Day---for a bit of perspective.

Ok, in case anyone backed out, I might bring in Al Franken or Michael Shermer or Michael Moore or Annie Lennox or ...ok, I'll stop....

Geez, what the hell would I serve this lot?

Where are the strong?

I just realised I didn't pick any women....but then again, like Bobster and Mike Boom I'd end up saying 'forget the conversation, let's just invite the 6 most beautiful women I can think of'....

the conversation would be along the lines of..

Every woman: ''Hi Jamie''

Me: ''Hhhhhiiiiiiii'' *passes out*

That probably wouldn't be a great party.

Can I have all of the Attractions and EC at one end of the table (Steve can sit next to me) and count them as one? Ta.

Umm..

Samuel Beckett
Annie Leibovitz
Bob Dylan
Norman Parkinson
Bjork

Nothing too rowdy, though Bjork may go off on one if we're not careful.

Dylan is probably my biggest idol, but I think he's much too introverted to be any fun at a dinner party, unless maybe the other 5 guests were Robbie Robertson, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel, Allen Ginsberg, and Bobby Neuwirth.

1. Peter O'Toole (One of the most colorful, charismatic and gifted artists ever)
2. Orson Welles (Has anyone here read the book he did with Peter Bogdanovich, This Is Orson Welles?)
3. Dick Gregory (A brilliant man)
4. John Barrymore (Probably the most interesting man I have ever read about)
5. Sarah Silverman (I have a crush on her. Very, very funny woman)
6. Virginia Woolf (When she was in the mood, she was apparently a real social dazzler)

Okay, I guess for now:

Elvis Costello
Steve Nieve
Tom Waits
Kurt Vonnegut
Joe Strummer
Greg Proops

With alternates of Nick Lowe and Aldous Huxley and Bob Dylan and maybe Jack Kerouac . . . I dont think I could invite myself to this party . . .

Okay, here's a twist:

rather than post my own answers right now, I'm going to post those of my 14 year-old daughter who was just listening to me talk about this last night.

Sponge Bob
Patrick
Michelle Branch
Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen (from Changing Rooms)
Van Gogh
and either Bart or Homer Simpson

I did remind her that she had several animated guests, but she still stuck with her original choices.

I guess you'd have to be extra careful with beverages...in case of smudging.

I'm afraid to go to Rope Leash's party for so many reasons, most of them having to do with ancient languages...

I'd invite

Claude Monet
Marie Cassat
Camille Claudel (Rodin's crazy lover)
Coco Chanel
Kurt Vonnegut
Henri Matisse

No room for Freida--she would push us all over the edge.

This party must take place in Paris, on a rooftop patio overlooking the Left Bank. Musicians on the street are playing the Gypsy Kings, among other things. The wind is soft and fresh.

Here's what we'd eat:

Brandy, burgundy wine and champagne.
Baguettes baked 2 hours before, dripping with thick, fresh butter.
Lamb chops, herbed butter sauce
some green veggie in garlic
thick chocolate mousse
cheese
more champagne
Don't bury me 'cause I'm not dead yet.

Or, we could go in the opposite direction with this thread...

1. Bill O'Reilly
2. Nat Turner
3. Ed Gein
4. Joan Crawford
5. Ted Nugent
6. Bobby Brown
