Jim Krall, dad of Diana, remembered fondly

Jim Krall, a prominent community volunteer, music advocate and father of the internationally renowned jazz pianist/vocalist Diana Krall, has died.

Krall died peacefully on Tuesday at the age of 78 after a long illness at the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital's palliative care unit surrounded by friends and family, including his two daughters.

Glenn Sinclair, a Nanaimo lawyer who has been one of Krall's best friends for decades,

is preparing the eulogy for his memorial services scheduled for Dec. 22.

He said one of his favourite memories of Krall was when he would drive around Nanaimo in his British MG sports car wearing an English hat and sporting a fake mustache.

"Jim had a great sense of humour and was well known for his one liners, which we called Krallies," Sinclair said.

"We had a lot of laughs together over the years and he will certainly be missed. It was a tough road for Jim over the last few years as his health declined and I visited him regularly when he was in hospital.

"We had some great chats while he was in hospital and we watched some of our favourite movies together."

Krall had a long-time passion for music and was an avid collector of 78 rpm records, gramophones, cylinder players and vintage sheet music, and played in many bands when younger.

Adella Krall, Jim's wife, died in 2002, but Sinclair said his daughters, Diana and Michelle, and their families have been by his bedside for weeks before he died.

Sinclair said a memorial service will be held for Krall at St. Paul's Lutheran Church at noon on Monday, followed by a reception at the Nanaimo Golf Club from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
Since you put me down, it seems i've been very gloomy. You may laugh but pretty girls look right through me.

Condolences to the family. Tough time of the year to lose a parent.

Seems like an appropriate time to post this - a piece called Jimmie, from Diana's 1st album, written for her dad and piano teacher Jimmy Rowles:

Here's the obituary: http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/comoxv ... fhid=16058

Stephen James Krall (1936 - 2014)

We are sad to say that Stephen James Krall, fondly known as "Jim," passed away peacefully in the NRGH Palliative Care Unit, late in the evening of December 16th, 2014 after a long illness, surrounded by members of his loving family.

Jim Krall, husband to his beloved Adella, was born in 1936 to his parents, Stephen and Jean Krall, and went on to become a prominent citizen of Nanaimo. He was the first person in British Columbia to have a "dual designation" of Chartered Accountant and Bachelor of Commerce degrees.

Music was a life long passion for Jim. He was an avid collector of 78 rpm records, gramophones, cylinder players and vintage sheet music. In his younger days, he was the piano player in many bands but was at his best playing stride piano at family gatherings and parties. He became president of the Nanaimo Gyro Club in 1988. He was famous for his unforgettable "one-liner" jokes and puns. He was immensely proud of the achievements of both of his daughters. At the time when Diana's musical career was taking off, Michelle was already serving in the RCMP, so Jim would tell people: "One's a cop and the other's got a record."

Jim will be deeply missed by his two loving daughters and their husbands, Declan MacManus and Rob Wigmore. He was much loved by his young grandsons, Dexter and Frank. He will be also deeply missed by his loving sister Sandra (Sandy) Qualls, brother Randy and his wife Janaya, nephew Stephen, Rob's daughter, Jessica and his many dear friends.

The family would like to thank Jim's health care aides, Jefrey Bugay, Percival Gonzales, Jeffrey Gutierrez, Edna Ricafrente and Cynthia Cabusas, as well as Dr. Robin Love and all of the NRGH Palliative Care staff who took care of our Jimmy. They provided us with love and kindness throughout Jim's struggle.
