The song 'Girl In The Other Room'

Post by Danny »

Loved this song on first listen - but I have to say the wonderful lyric is also pretty cruel, as the girl in the other room is clearly Cait, having to listen to Elvis and Diana on the other side of the wall. God knows what she would think if she heard it. That said, I doubt she's one of the ones who has rushed out and helped it to debut at number 4 in the charts.

On the whole though I don't 'get' Diana Krall. She sounds too much like Joni Mitchell: why on earth doesn't she try to sing in a style of her own? Same goes for Michael Buble and Harry Connick - why don't they want to sound like themselves rather than like Sinatra? It happens with heavy influences though - there are loads of young male singers coming through at the mo who clearly worshipped Thom Yorke in their teens, and can't help themselves from singing in his style now.

I never looked at the song in this way. It can be interpreted in any of a millions ways.

"Stop This World" is performed so brilliantly.

Sorry, Blue, it's official, and soon to be enshrined in the Canadian constitution: Diana Krall (is that pronounced 'crawl' or to rhyme with 'Val'?) has written the best Joni Mitchell song that Joni never wrote. And, LJ, I'm in love with her on account of her penchant for the see-through dress.

Really, would you fall in love with me if I wore a see-through dress? Or is that criteria resticted to jazz singers of blond? Love her or hate her-why isn't this Annexed? I'll say two postive things about her since I've been mean, she has great taste in music and at least one man. I took the song as a lament of the 'other woman' which math tells us she was, she whined and Elvis reworked it into lyrics. Just a theory.

No, no such restrictions, and yes, the dress did the trick!

Not annexed cos we're discussing an artistic collaboration of EC.

PS Your wording makes me think, will he ever play Episode Of Blond again, or has she banned it?

EC has pronounced "Krall" as rhyming with "Val" on various talk shows. BTW - It always appeared to me that the infamous see-through dress was indeed faux-see-through. Ahem. . .not that I was looking that hard, mind you. I would suppose only EC knows for sure!

I hope he doesn't have another episode but he must play it again. So glorious live. No restrictions? Oh Mr. Westinghouse I see a big upswing in the fashion world of chiffon and mesh this season.

Migdd-He's also said 'Dianer'. Which dress was false? It was a joke I made taken too seriously. My wit (or lack thereof) appeals to singular tastes, few share it on this board.

For the record I meant the working up of certain men in an amorous way was due to her clothing choices. That could never explain an affection for her music.. . what could?

Ahem. . .What see-through dress?!!

Maybe it is Dianer Kraaaaaaaaal and her manager convinced her many years ago that Diana Krawl sounded more, um. . . like royalty.

That explains why they call her 'princess'.

Canadian media (who mention Krall a lot since she's Canadian) pronounce it Krall as in rhyming with Hall or Fall.

 It is in fact, Krall as in wall....which I'm pounding my head against. She is the 'princess' of jazz....much like the Princess Diana of Wales. I think that covers everything. Oh, except the dress. What dress are you talking about?

I wish her dress did. I'm banning myself from all things Krall after this even though I wrote a smashing dialogue between her and Elvis. There was a Vanity Fair dress and some black one I think but this is all memory. The 'princess' quip was a joke! No one is getting them.

The Vanity Fair dress was by no means "see through"

Let's put it to the test shall we?

LJ- you know we all love you individually and collectively.

I must admit, I can't get into Diana Krall's looks or her voice. I heard her version of Almost Blue and I think Elvis was being very generous when he said he believed her version was the definitive one.

I had the same thought about Almost Blue, VG.

and BlueChair, the dress might not have been see-thru, but it certainly was chilly in that room, if memory serves.

Her left boob was hanging out, if I recall correctly... I'm sure one of the Foyles will verify.

I've seen more revealing dresses at family events.

And yes, Krall's version of "Almost Blue" sucks.

Not being well-versed in the woman's work, i've kept neutral in the 'is Krall crap?' argument. However, i heard 'Narrow Daylight' on the radio today and I really liked it.

Is that track typical of the album on the whole?

Haha, Blue, I read that... then just after saw your new icon.

It was an oddly fitting facial expression.
