Rank Punch The Clock

Post by King Hoarse »

There’s probably less of everyone’s favourite songs on this one than on Imperial Bedroom (duh), but I found it pretty hard to rank nonetheless. One reason for that is while the versions on IB are pretty much perfect IMHO, these songs would need some more working on, and that’s not just because of the production, as in Everyday…For instance, I really like the verses, bridge and instrumental parts of Mouth Almighty, but my ears bleed to the “telling you what’s what” pre-chorus. Anyways, here goes:

1. Shipbuilding
2. Pills And Soap
3. Let Them All Talk
4. Mouth Almighty
5. The Invisible Man
6. King Of Thieves
7. TKO (Boxing Day)
8. Charm School
9. Everyday I Write The Book
10. The Greatest Thing
11. The World And His Wife
12. The Element Within Her
13.Love Went Mad (My vote for worst EC song on an original album…Bruce Thomas likes it, though.)

As usual, I’ll be back with the results in a week or so.

I agree with your setup completely, but of course, my ranking's slightly different. I prefer each of these in alternate takes.

1. Shipbuilding
2. Pills And Soap
3. Charm School
4. King Of Thieves
5. Everyday I Write The Book
6. The Invisible Man
7. The World And His Wife
8. Mouth Almighty
9. The Element Within Her
10. The Greatest Thing
11. Let Them All Talk
12. Love Went Mad
13. TKO (Boxing Day) ... which is my choice for one of his worst songs ever.

Tough one, and not because all the songs are good :p

1. Pills And Soap
2. Shipbuilding
x. Heathen Town
3. Let Them All Talk
4. Everyday I Write The Book
5. The World And His Wife
6. Love Went Mad
x. The Flirting Kind
7. King Of Thieves
8. Mouth Almighty
9. The Invisible Man
10. The Element Within Her
11. The Greatest Thing
12. TKO (Boxing Day)
13. Charm School

x - If b-sides were allowed, this is were they would go :P

The cheesy TKO Horns bits are largely responible for the weak parts of this album, imo. There are no bad songs though, they're ok at worst.

I would have to rate Punch the Clock worse then Goodbye Cruel World. Too disco sounding. Perhaps some of the songs could be re-worked, or maybe they already have, but that synth-pop sound and the cheesy horns is grating. I find myself unable to rate any song as worse that the other. Sorry!

Sorry to go out of topic, but would it not be interesting if certain albums, suffering from horrible production, were re-recorded? Is it really any worse than remaking a movie? 'Course, movie remakes are usually remade from a good original, so I generally hate movie remakes :p.

I might also add that I like "Heathen Town" and "The Flirting Kind" more than most of the album!

Forget how bad the horns are supposed to make this album sound, and listen to the songs..they sound ace! Looking at this list, there isn't a bad song on the album IMHO.

Hey ho, Gillibeanz, it seems that in your list King Of Thieves appears twice while there isn't any trace of The Element Within Her.

I forgot to mention the extended remix of Let Them All Talk. The end section, where they isolate the piano and then the strings, kills me.
