mp3 of "Down Among The Wine And Spirits" - lyric

Post by johnfoyle »

From listserv-

Here's a link to an mp3 of "Down Among The Wine And Spirits"
from last Wednesday, 9-19 in Nashville.

Listening to it now for the second time , it's a typical Costello 'early draft' , at five minutes containing a few hooks that will serve the song better when it gets tightened up.

Having listened to the Duluth , Bridgeport and Albany performances of this song, here is my guess at the lyric -

( the order of the lines varied each time ; I've arranged them as per the Albany outing)

Down among the wines and spirits
Where a man gets what he merits
Once he was written in letters of nine feet tall
But now he finds out where he has fallen
Since he set his mind on her completely
Oh, but I guess you must have seen him lately
Walking around with a pain that never ceases
He starts to talk and then he goes to pieces

Walking around with a head thats fit to burst
A heart full of hurt and a powerful thirst
But as he picks himself up from a sawdust floor
Clicks his fingers to that swinging door
Suddenly he's calling out more, more, more
I'm twice the foolish man I was before

(Additional lines only sung at first performance in Duluth -
He lives with the echoes of the words of the final quarrel
The vacant chamber and the empty barrel
)

Down among the wines and spirits
Bubbles escaping from a prism
From the rim of a glass of grape
She sails through his memory just like a ship of chaplet
As he was starting to sink he was drinking to drown his sorrows
That fill his nights and empty his tomorrows

Walking around with a head thats fit to burst
A heart full of hurt and a powerful thirst
But as he picks himself up from a sawdust floor
Clicks his fingers to that swinging door
Suddenly he's calling out more, more, more
I'm twice the foolish man I was before

Speaks of invisible things he hardly credits

Down among
Down among
Down among the wines and spirits

a ship of chaplet
This a puzzling reference . If 'chaplet' is what I've heard , either of these definitions could apply

A chaplet is a metal support used in casting to support the core of a mold. A chaplet is incorporated with the part being cast and so is generally made of materials that has higher melting point than the liquidified casting metal.

The term Chaplet is used commonly to designate Roman Catholic prayer forms which use prayer beads, but are not necessarily related to the Rosary.
