The WA fest is April 17 and the Byron Bay fest is April 25. There's a good eight day gap in there.

Council delays could halt Bob Dylan encore at Byron Bay Bluesfest

by Josh Robertson
The Courier-Mail
December 21, 2010

A BYRON Bay music festival risks having an encore performance from folk protest legend Bob Dylan next year strangled by local government red tape.

Bluesfest director Peter Noble has threatened Byron Shire Council with court action over its decision to delay planning approval for the proposed April 26 concert until February.

Mr Noble said this amounted to a "quasi denial'' of Bluesfest's application for an extra day, spurred in early November by the rapid sell out of Dylan's headlining April 25 performance.

Representatives for Dylan and fellow performer Elvis Costello had agreed to the extra show but needed confirmation by mid-January, Mr Noble said.

"The performance is still blowing in the wind, mate,'' he said.

Byron Shire's environment and planning director Ray Darner said council planning staff broadly supported the extra day. However, the matter was referred to a February council meeting with the support of two councillors, Basil Cameron and Patrick Morrisey, whom Mr Noble said had "a 100 per cent record of voting against any application we make''.

Mr Noble said the NSW Land and Environment Court could force a decision in early February but that would be too late.

Bluesfest's only hope lies in an extraordinary council meeting, which councillor Tom Tabart said he and Mayor Jan Barnham were trying to arrange by New Year's Eve.

Elvis 'n Bob's impact on Koalas - a interesting variation on The Curse Of Costello -

http://www.byronnews.com.au/story/2011/ ... n-concert/

Decision on second Dylan concert

Gary Chigwidden | 6th January 2011

A decision on a planned second Bob Dylan concert at this year’s Bluesfest is expected to be made today.

Byron Council has called an extraordinary meeting for this morning to deal with an application for a sixth day to be added to the festival to accommodate the legendary singer-songwriter.

While the council’s ecologist doesn’t support the extra day because of the unknown impact it might have on the local koala population at the festival’s permanent Tyagarah site, the council’s executive manager of environment and planning, Ray Darney, has recommended the Section 96 (DA variation) application be approved.

The council’s deferral of the application before Christmas led to a war-of-words between festival director Peter Noble, who threatened court action, and the council which got national media coverage.

Mr Noble said the second Dylan concert had been provisionally booked and if he couldn’t get an answer from the council by the middle of January, he expected Dylan would ‘make other plans’.

He said because of the Anzac Day public holiday falling when it did, the application for a sixth day was a ‘one-off’.
Byron Mayor Cr Jan Barham said criticism of the council over the issue had been unwarranted.

Cr Barham said that the council, which had always supported Bluesfest, had to follow proper planning processes.

A report to councillors said the relatively minor amendments to the site layout included extending the festival site to the north and relocating camping areas to the centre of the site.

The Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) said it had no objections to the extra day being added to the festival, but it should be restricted to this year’s event only.

The festival has approval for 17,500 people a day, including on-site campers, for the next two years.

That figure will jump to 20,000 a day from 2013 to 2020.

Dylan to headline extra Bluesfest day

Suzanne Simonot | January 6th, 2011

A SPECIAL meeting of Byron Shire Council has voted to allow Bob Dylan to headline a one-off, extra day at the 2011 Byron Bay Bluesfest.

Councillors today voted six to one in favour of allowing the festival to add an extra day, on April 26, in lieu of the Anzac Day public holiday.

The festival will now run from April 21 to 26.

Elvis Costello is expected to join Dylan on the bill for the extra show.

Tickets for the extra day are expected to go on sale by the end of the month.

Bluesfest pricing sparks complaints

24th February 2011

AS THE line-up grows for Bluesfest 2011, so do the cheers but, as with anything, there are also a few grumbles along the way.

It’s not the line-up itself that’s drawing the grizzle of the punters, it’s the sixth day and its fantastic line-up.

“If any artists are only appearing on the sixth day it definitely [sic] feels like we as five-day holders are being punished for being too eager and not waiting,” posted Andjel on the Bluesfest website’s forum.

Heading the sixth-day line-up, in his second slot on the schedule, is Bob Dylan.

Elvis Costello and Grace Jones have also taken up the offer, but it’s the addition of Paul Kelly and Tim Finn, who only play that day, the Anzac Day public holiday slot, that has annoyed punters online.

“I know that my husband and I bought the five-day tickets because it guaranteed an opportunity to see every artist,” nadiavenus posted on the forum.

Festival director Peter Noble said the world-class acts billed for day six warranted an extra cost and those who don’t want to pay are “tight arses”.

This Elvis still hasn't left the building

Iain Shedden
The Australian
February 25, 2011

A FLORIDA newspaper recently described Elvis Costello as "the Alison singer". It was a curious summation of the artist's career, picking out his second single from 34 years ago, when he has had much bigger hits and has written hundreds of quality songs since then.

"That's as big as I get in Palm Beach, I think," Costello says, laughing it off.

He is a hard man to pin down in just a few words. Aside from his voluminous catalogue, stretching across 32 albums, not including live collections, collaborations and compilations, Costello has taken on a wide variety of guises as a performer and recording artist since emerging as the champion of new wave in the late 1970s.

His upcoming visit to Australia, which includes two appearances at the International Blues and Roots Festival in Byron Bay over Easter, sees him accompanied by the Imposters, a band that features two of his longest-serving collaborators, drummer Pete Thomas and keyboards player Steve Nieve, both of whom served in Costello's first chart-topping outfit the Attractions.

It's Costello's third trip to Australia with that line-up, which also features bassist Davey Farragher. If the shows are anything like the ones he did here previously we can expect a barrage of popular material from his pop-rock cannon, perhaps interspersed with one or two from his recent, largely rootsy albums, Secret, Profane and Sugarcane and National Ransom.

The latter of these albums, he announced to The Australian two weeks ago, is to be his last.

Costello will continue to release new music, he says, but feels the old album format is no longer for him in the age of digital downloads.

"There will be new songs and new places to put them," he says. "If there's a new way to do it that feels satisfying I'll do it, but I don't have a recording contract and I'm not seeking one. You can't work for other people doing something which isn't, frankly, going to make a difference. Plus I have plenty of opportunity to play new songs."

Indeed he does. If Costello's appetite for the traditional album has waned, his enthusiasm for the stage is undiminished. The conundrum, as he describes it, is in finding the right songs for a particular audience.

"I think if I were to go on a stage at an English festival and play Alison there would only be a small proportion of the people who would know it," he says. "It hasn't stayed in people's hearts as much as some other tunes. In other parts of the world it would be different songs again. I can't leave the stage in Holland without playing I Want You (a song that is particularly popular in Australia as well).

"Same goes for Turkey," he continues, "who also likes She, so that's two songs that are very contrasting. There you have the conundrum of putting a set together."

The material is subject also to Costello's choice of accompaniment. Since the Attractions had their early successes with Watching the Detectives, I Don't Want to Go to Chelsea and Pump it Up their leader has gone off on many tangents, performing on his own, with string quartets and with orchestras as well as bands.

An orchestra, for example, "is a different book. The Brodsky Quartet is a different book. With Steve [Nieve, with whom he toured Australia 12 years ago] it's different again.

"I don't miss any of the others when I'm doing the thing I'm doing," he says.

"It never becomes mundane. Over the years I've had these great opportunities to play with different musicians."

Such is his wealth of material the 56-year-old singer could choose a different set list for each of his five Australian performances this time and come out with a quality show for each. On that basis he has taken to letting the audience decide at some of his shows in the US, introducing a spinning songbook from which fans can pick their favourites.

As Costello says, "it's never predictable".

What's certain is Costello, just as he hass turned his back on the conventional album, is taking stock of his career in other ways, in particular how it affects his personal life.

"I have a lot of other responsibilities now, some of which are nothing to do with music," he says. "You can't spend your entire life enjoying yourself in everything you do do. You have to choose."

Chief among those responsibilities is being a father to his four-year-old twin boys, Dexter and Frank, a task made more complicated by the fact that his wife, singer Diana Krall, is also an international touring performer.

During our conversation Costello breaks off to take a call from Krall, who is on her way home from a performance in Dallas. He has been home dad "with the lads" for a few days.

"They're at an age now," he says, "that I won't talk too much more about them. When you're a new parent you want to talk about them all the time, just out of the joy of it. When they get to school you reach a point where you don't want to do that. We owe it to them to not tell everything about their every move."

His pride, however, is evident. "They are a joy," he says of the boys, "and it takes a lot to get me out the door. My wife and I constantly balance wanting to be with each other and with our boys with what we do for a living. Over time it works out."

Another concession to family -- although not solely that -- is his decision to end his flirtation with television as a chat-music show host. His series, Spectacle, screened here on the ABC, earned rave reviews. The format of interviews with and performances by big names such as Bruce Springsteen, Bono and Lou Reed was a winner, but there will be no more in the foreseeable future, he says.

"We could return to it," he concedes. "It's a good idea, but we did 20 that were of a very high standard and I don't really want to drop the standard by compromising."

One less commitment might allow Costello more time with his family, but it might also let him sit at home more and listen to music, something he still does with a passion when he can. He's especially fond of old 78rpm records from the pioneering days of blues, jazz and country.

"I'm a single song kind of fan." he says. "Most of the music I listen to on my own at home, I listen to 78s. I listen to a batch of them. Currently that's something I'm really interested in. You can find wild, untapped caches of music that way; music you've never come across before, and you don't do that so readily when you're listening to albums."

He says there's a "direct communication" in 78s, scratches and all. "There's a magic to it. You're a little closer to it, keeping in mind that some of the people stepping up to the mic on these recordings were doing it for the first time. They knew that whatever they did in that moment was what went out.

"When you hear a classic recording like Wild Man Blues by Louis Armstrong coming out of a 78, the feeling is like he's just through that door over there. That's a really incredible thought when you have it. It's beautiful."

Elvis Costello and the Imposters play the West Coast Blues and Roots Festival in Fremantle, Western Australia on April 17; Sydney April 19; Melbourne, April 21; and International East Coast Blues and Roots Festival, Byron Bay, NSW, on April 25 and 26.

I panicked and thought this was referring to Washington state in the US, where I reside. I looked up "Fremantle, WA" and couldn't quite figure out where it was. I felt pretty dumb as I continuously zoomed out only to reveal Australia.

Is that really a quarter to three in the afternoon on that clock?! I just can't imagine being able to rock out at that time of day. Shades of that infamous tea-time scheduling in Glastonbury back in '05.

Dylan wows the crowd at West Coast Blues 'n' Roots

The phrase "on for young and old" was probably coined for the West Coast Blues 'n' Roots festival.

A 20,000-strong crowd of kids, grandparents and everyone in between enjoyed performances from 25-year-old debutant Megan Washington to acts that have been making music for half a century, like Bob Dylan, Mavis Staples and the Blind Boys of Alabama at Fremantle Park yesterday.

A veritable spring chicken at 56, singer-songwriter Elvis Costello and his long-time band the Imposters defied a sultry afternoon to rock out, finishing with the Nick Lowe classic (What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding.

While most punters were there to see rock legend Dylan, who turns 70 next month, a healthy crowd arrived in time to catch Costello on the main stage, and then blind indigenous superstar Gurrumul Yunupingu in the big top.

A more obvious hit was Michael Franti, who has been a regular visitor to Fremantle since his old hip-hop band, the Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy, toured in 1992.

Jones fires as Dylan flops

18/Apr/2011

REVIEWED BY: Joel Kelly

(extract)

Pop chameleon Elvis Costello played a diverse show as expected, jamming through a range of genres during his barely-paused 75-minute set.

Costello and his band The Impostors strung into some punk tunes which transcended into reggae, blues and pop with trademark riffs and energy.

Bob Dylan's performance was like going to see the Eiffel Tower in the pouring rain - it really did not live up to the hype.

Dylan breezed through a lot of his latest tunes until mid-concert when he played a few hits like Highway 61 and Like a Rolling Stone but it was clear that much of the audience where frustrated by the unfamiliarity of songs and gruffness of Bob's ageing voice.

To make matters worse, the big screens only showed a distant shot of the stage, meaning anyone further than 30 metres could barely see a thing.

Many people left after Dylan and missed the scary, vulgar, erotic yet utterly captivating Grace Jones.

Jones arrived 20 minutes late, rising up from the stage wearing a feather headpiece but performed a visually amazing show which saw several costume changes and a barely-there leotard.

Parents had to cover the eyes and ears of children as the risqué performer conversed and growled then peaked with Pull Up to the Bumper.

West Coast Blues 'n' Roots gets it right in 2011

(...)
Emerging star Washington seemed a little overwhelmed when she began her set. It was only after she muffed a line on a solo take on Underground that the 25 year old relaxed and things picked up, especially clicking with the growing crowd on numbers from her top 5 album I Believe You Liar. During Underground she added a line about drinking gin with Elvis Costello to the lyric and his presence may have played a part in her nervousness.

The spectacled one made an entrance soon himself as he tore through a crowd-pleasing set that featured many of his biggest hits including (The Angles Want To Wear My) Red Shoes, Radio Radio, Good Year For The Roses and Pump It Up. The Imposters (including two of the three Attractions) provide sympathetic backing and the presence of bassist Danny Faragher on backing vocals lessens Elvis’s tendency to shout when he has a full band behind him.

In the festival’s most dramatic timetable clash, Elvis was on at the same time as Mavis Staples. As well as handpicking a number of cuts off her Grammy winning album, You Are Not Alone, including the title track, John Fogerty’s Wrote A Song For Everyone and Too Close/On My Way To Heaven. At 71, her powers have not diminished and Staples was ably backed by a crack band and delivered gospel blues at its finest. Church singing was never like this round our way.
