Top 10 Dylan Records

This is for all non-EC or peripheral-EC topics. We all know how much we love talking about 'The Man' but sometimes we have other interests.

I don't think it's unusual or weird at all. If anything, just be glad that you have a girlfriend who is a huge Costello fan. They be few and far between.

I had no idea Bob Dylan had 10 albums before yesterday.

"Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues again" is a great song.

It'll take me a while to get used to the harmonica ringing in my ear.

Dylan´s genius as a songwritten is never more obvious than on the acoustic side of this masterpiece.
Do you mean side 2 (there are other acoustic numbers eg Love Minus Zero/No Limit). I read that he recorded side 2, check it out -- Mr. Tambourine Man, Gates Of Eden, It's Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding) and It's All Over Now Baby Blue -- on the very same day. Amazing. He also recorded all of Another Side Of Bob Dylan all on the same day.

With the songwriting on Bringing It All Back Home he really first turned folk music and songwriting in general on its head... so full of ideas and such highly individualized style.

It's interesting to see the shifts and changes he goes through from Freewheelin' to B On B in particular, particularly the departure from the straightforward, more formal folk style of The Times They're A Changin'.

Poppet, that's why it might make more sense to listen to The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan (his 2nd album)and/or Another Side Of Bob Dylan (4th) -- these are quite accessible, then consider 2 and/or 4 on my list (5th and 6th), then Blonde On Blonde (7th) again -- because Blonde On Blonde is the climax of a gradual creative transformation through the preceding few albums. You'll probably like the well loved Blood On The Tracks immediately though.

okay bamboo, point me back in the direction of your post once i've decided i like blood on the tracks, AND want more.

'cause that list is too big for me to digest. there's so much to listen to! i don't have the Outkast album, and i'd like to have that, and there's stuff by Billy Bragg that i've never heard, and there's stuff by *EC* that i haven't heard, and there's Mission of Burma, i like that but own none, and i always did like Sam Phillips, and i own none of her stuff, and that doesn't even attempt to start to cover the classical stuff i don't have .........

so just remind me later, okay?

Poppet, you should buy Speakerboxxx/The Love Below and a Sam Phillips album, say Martinis and Bikinis, at the same time. You could be fairly sure you'd be the only person in all of America making that particular purchase that day.

Poppet get Martinis and Bikinis or Cruel Inventions. Sam was pushing the latter the first time I heard her- opening for one E. Costello in Berkeley in 91. The songs really grow on you- great melodies and some guitar playing from one D. MacManus as well.

Sorry poppet, i was suggesting how B On B might best be appreciated, not that all that must be.

And don't forget to read the several Dylan biographies! It would only take four hours a day for 2 months.
