Yes, iPole, amazing.

But surely Clown Strike must be someone's favourite?
(it was mine for awhile)

And Rocking Horse Road? If only the Brodskys were rankers...

Clown Strike shares the first place together with All the Rage in my book, so if you want to have the first place on my list you can change if you want ;)

I haven't gone back and counted, but it seems to me that this particular album poll has gotten more responses than previous ones. I'd be curious to know the actual turnout. Perhaps the good King is keeping track?

1 thru 8 is about as tough as it gets.

And another kick to the crotch for 20% Amnesia:

1 All The Rage
2 13 Steps Lead Down
3 You Tripped At Every Step
4 Just About Glad
5 Sulky Girl
6 Pony Street
7 Still To Soon To Know
8 Rocking Horse Road
9 Kinder Murder
10 London's Brilliant Parade
11 My Science Fiction Twin (And he answered "Superbly") 8)
12 This Is Hell
13 Clown Strike
14 20% Amnesia
15 Favourite Hour
Now I'm the invisible man, and you can't see me.

Please keep this ranking going for one more week. Im going to Berlin tomorrow and Brutal Youth will be a companion. People sure don't like "This is hell" very much. Strange.

(im listening to "red cotton" from the secret arias over and over :)

So do I. People are just jealous of Elvis' lyrical prowess.

24 rankers here so far, which I think is about average. I think Trust was the first to have more than 30, and is probably still in the lead, somewhat unexpectedly.

And of course, ranking is a bit unfair. I love 20% Amnesia and This Is Hell, but the others are just too great to be pushed further down. They would probably both be in the top 5 of at least 5 other EC records. (In fact, they both have a bit of a MLAR feel to me, and I'm sure they would have benefitted from that sound, as would Still Too Soon To Know.) But still I'm really surprised that 20% is the least popular song on the record. After all these years, it still grows on me with every listen, which is something I can't say about This Is Hell, my favourite after the first spin.

My biggest surprise so far in this whole ranking shebang is that Favourite Hour is so close to the bottom. I just don't understand. To my ears that's one of Elvis' finest hours as singer and melodicist (if the latter is a word).

I put Still Too Soon To Know at the bottom of my ranking because the sound really doesn't fit AND I think Elvis should have kept the intimacy of the first two verses by not wailing on IIIIN HIS SPEEEEELL and WAAAYYY THAT HEEEEE. IMHO it sounds misplaced and undermines the drama of the bridge. I really like the song as such.

I do like 20 %. Would need the album to find out if it could grow on me.

(I didn't get B.Y. because of "Brutal", precisely).

In this case I like every song on the album, so the last song I ranked I still like very much. I've been doing some thinking about Brutal Youth. I think the album is a polished version of his youther days, it resembles anger and guilt and along the way it mentions other thing, like politics and society and whatnot. I beleive the meaning of this album is very much the same as TYM, except it's not so loud and direct, and the artist has now fully blossomed and a lot more mature and capable than back in the 70's. I like this album because it reminds us all that Elvis is still Elvis, he still feels his anger and his guilt even years after he abandoned the punk scene.
ANd here's a good question: Do you think Bruce asked Elvis what "How To Be Dumb" was all about as soon as he stepped into the studio?

I heard* it was probably what led to the break up of the Attractions in 1996.

The Attractions broke up long before 1996, which is why they "Re-United" for BY. I think it mentioned that on the sleeve note or on a sticker or something. I would say BC was the last real EC and the ATT album.

Perhaps I have misunderstood your comment but they didn't "Reunite" specifically for Brutal Youth.

Whilst you may say that Blood & Chocolate is the last real Elvis Costello & The Attractions album, the history books show that All This Useless Beauty was an album by Elvis Costello & The Attractions.

The clues are in the words on the cover of the album - you just have to look for them.

It should be noted (or maybe it's completely unnecessary) that even if a song is ranked low, it doesn't mean the song is disliked. It justs means people are fonder of other songs.

1 Rocking Horse Road
2 Clown Strike
3 Thirteen Steps Lead Down
4 Londons Brilliant Parade
5 Sulky Girl
6 You Tripped at Every Step
7 My Science Fiction Twin
8 All the Rage
9 Favorite Hour
10 Just About Glad
11 This Is Hell
12 Pony Street
13 Still Too Soon to Know
14 20% Amnesia
15 Kinder Murder

The difference between my love for Rocking Horse Road and Kinder Murder is really not that much...
