Dylan reissues...

Dylan reissues...

Post by Who Shot Sam? »

Anyone else get their hands on the new Dylan SACD hybrid reissues? I don't have the equipment to take advantage of the SACD format, but the new versions sound superb even in their standard incarnation, especially "Highway 61 Revisited" and "Blood on the Tracks." "Blood on the Tracks" in particular is a revelation. The original CD pressing sounded like it was recorded at the bottom of the ocean. The new one is beautifully clean and clear - a masterpiece with layers of grime removed.

The others I picked up are "Blonde on Blonde," "Bringing It All Back Home," and "Desire." I've heard that the new mix of "John Wesley Harding" has been botched, so Bob fans be forewarned. It's a shame, as I was looking to replace my vinyl copy.

So far I've picked up Highway 61 Revisited, Blood On The Tracks, and Oh Mercy. And I agree with Who Shot Sam in that there is a significant approvement, even on my shitty stereo. I noticed a similar improvement with the Rolling Stones titles released in hybrid SACD last year, particularly on Beggar's Banquet and Let It Bleed.

I picked up Desire. The main reason I bought this one first is that the previous mix was especially horrible. The reissue is especially horrible. I'll be picking up the others - but I tell you, I'm starting to have to sneak this stuff (like the Elvis remasters, dvds we have on VHS) into the house like its pornography.

Fuck retirement, let's dance.

People who are considering buying the new Dylan reissues may want to check this out:

http://www.audioasylum.com/forums/hirez ... 52364.html

It's a shame they seem to have botched some of the titles, but there are definitely significant improvements on the ones I have.

BWAP, it seems Desire is one of the titles that wasn't redone very well, at least if this list is at all accurate.

Normally I would go back and edit, but Blue Chair responded very quickly - I didn't mean to write:

The reissue is especially horrible

I'm not sure what I meant to say exactly.

It's a marked improvement over the original cd release. However, Joey still is not quite right...still too much distortion on the high part of the chorus. [/quote]

useless,

Blonde on Blonde was initially a double LP, but like many early double LP's was squeezed onto a single disc when released on CD.

This would have worked for the new hybrid SACD version. However, the disc contains an extra mix of the album in 5.1 format, for those with SACD players and surround sound systems. Because of this extra mix, they couldn't fit everything on a single disc, so they went back to the double album format. Luckily, they are only charging a few dollars more for the two disc set.

Don't have SACD either but have the reissues of Nashville Skyline & Street Legal. These are both new albums to me and of the two I prefer NS.

I picked up Bringing It All Back Home today. I'm hearing sounds on this one that I didn't even notice before!

And now Mr. Dylan joins EC and the Beatles in the getting my money more than once club -- and the sad truth is that I've never listened to the copies of "Blonde on Blonde" or "Blood on the Tracks" I've picked up in the last couple of years all the way through...don't know why, exactly. Maybe it was the sound.

Still, "Highway 61" is one of my all time favorite albums and I've NEVER liked the sound....Also, "Freewheeling" is a favorite -- is that part of the reissues?

Anyone else picked these up in the last 18 months or so? Anyone who got them initially have anything else to add? I'm toying with picking them up and am curious as to how people have found them in the long run.

So far I have:

Freewheelin'
Bringing It All Back Home
Highway 61 Revisited
Blood On The Tracks
Oh Mercy

They all sound superb, but now that I have a SACD-compatible DVD player they sound even better (unfortunately I can't test their full potential them cause I don't have 5.1 capabilities)

I have a gold CD of Blonde on Blonde which sounds great to me - which is why I've put off the SACD so far.

It's funny that you'd revive this thread, 'cause ever since seeing No Direction Home a few weeks ago I've been itching to get more... particularly Another Side Of Bob Dylan and Desire.

I have all of 'em, with the exception of John Wesley Harding, Slow Train Coming and Love And Theft. I've heard very negative things about the JWH remastering. I will get Slow Train, even though Christian-era Bob has never been my bag. As for Love And Theft, I just could not see how it could be an improvement on the original release, which sounded just fine to me.

I would like to have seen SACD reissues of New Morning and The Basement Tapes, but it looks as though Sony has given up on SACD, so remastered versions are the best we can hope for.

All of the Dylan SACDs I do have are excellent. Blood On The Tracks in particular is a revelation.

Yeah, I hope they at least get around to remastering the rest. Would love a remastered Before The Flood. Recent remasters of Bob Dylan and The Times They Are A Changin' are available in regular remastered CD form only. I'd like to get both of those soon too, especially since they're dirt cheap.

Anyone actually listened to the remastered John Wesley Harding album? I'm looking to pick up some Dylan since I only have Blood on the Tracks and JWH is the one that sounds the most interesting to me, but if the sound really is that terrible perhaps I should save my money for something else.

Bad Ambassador picked up the box set of SACD reissues and said that it doesn't sound appreciably worse than the earlier version. It never was a sonic masterpiece, but I love the album, so I've decided to see if I can pick it up used on eBay.

The good folks @ HMV* have another Bob promo giveaway.
This time it's:

'Live at Carnegie Hall 1963':
The times they are a-changin'
Ballad of Hollis Brown
Boots of Spanish leather
Lay down your weary Tune
North country blues
With God on our side

The cover says 'promotional - not for sale' and there's no indication in store to suggest that you couldn't just pick up 20 copies and walk out. Hurry, get yours while stocks last!

*being a careless idiot, I typed HMV when I really meant Virgin.

Is there any way I could beg you to pop back and pick up another copy with an eye to sending it on? I'd be hugely appreciative as our local Virgin closed a while back and it's quite a journey to the nearest now. Also, not all stores are so liberaly dishing them out, apparently, most are sticking to the buy 2 Dylan CDs and get this free rule.

OK, I'm now the proud owner of 4 'spare' copies of said promo CD. One goes to Bad Amabassador, and the others to the 1st 3 lucky people to PM me (Virgin staff need not apply).

Just seen Dylan finishing his latest European tour here in Dublin. Loud , rockin' stuff , really tight band , great versions of Highwater ( for Charley Patton) , Highway 61 Revisited , Visions of Johanna ,and Señor (Tales Of Yankee Power). He's still as vital as ever.

See
